YesAsia Editorial Description
A blind swordsman returns to a once peaceful village only to find it overrun by gangsters who have hired the infamous mercenary bodyguard Yojimbo to protect them. It's a battle of wits and sword-fighting ability as the blind man and Yojimbo square off in a duel where winner takes all.
"...[A] curate's egg of a samurai saga....Okamoto's fight sequences and air of glum rancour are convincing..."

A town driven mad by greed
|
Some might fear that "Zatoichi Meets Yojimbo" is just a gimmicky excuse to unite screen legends Katsu Shintaro and Mifune Toshiro, but there is nothing gimmicky about this film. It yields solid entertainment from start to finish. A small town has been torn apart by greed. A wealthy merchant is rumored to have piles of ill-gotten gold and one of his two sons wants to make it his own. The grasping son hires Toshiro Mifune to help him grab the gold. The merchant hires Zatoichi (Katsu Shintaro) to help defend it. Then the merchant's other son, an official at the local mint who helped his father acquire the gold by degrading the currency, intervenes to snatch it for himself. Director Okamoto Kihachi creates a richly atmospheric film, with loads of action, leavened by the occasional humor characteristic of the Zatoichi series. Katsu Shintaro's blind masseur is a grubby and venal character, but shines with nobility in this amoral milieu. Mifune's samurai-for-hire is a larger than life marvel, a corrupt bully with a soft spot for the local madam. "Zatoichi Meets Yojimbo" delivers the goods as the town explodes in a conflagration of greedy violence. This riveting actioner is well worth watching and I recommend it highly. |
