Directed by Isaka Satoshi (g@me), Zo no Senaka follows the final six months of a man's life as he comes to terms with his past, present, and future. Also known as The Back of the Elephant, the film is based on an Akimoto Yasushi novel that has also inspired a manga and a TV drama. Though the story seems familiar in light of all the pure love films the Japanese film industry has coughed up in the last few years, this touching, understated melodrama aims for the heart in subtler fashion. Acclaimed actor Yakusho Koji (Babel, Retribution) brings a quiet gravity to the protagonist's journey, capturing the heart and mind of a dying man who has chosen to live.
Having worked hard his entire life, middle-aged businessman Fujiyama Yukihiro (Yakusho Koji) is now at the prime of his career. A routine medical check, however, confirms the worst: terminal lung cancer. Looking back at his past 48 years of life and the six months he has left, Yukihiro decides to live in the present with no regret. With the support of his wife Miwako (Imai Miki), he chooses to decline all treatment, and use his limited time to reconnect with the people and places that have made his life meaningful.
