YesAsia Editorial Description

Attracting over three million moviegoers at the box office, Harmony's inspirational story of a female prison choir has become one of Korea's highest-grossing films of 2010. With rousing music, good humor, and powerful human drama, it's no wonder the film struck such an emphatic chord with audiences. Lost star Kim Yoon Jin leads a talented sisterhood that includes veteran actress Na Moon Hee, Kang Hye Won (Haeundae), Jang Young Nam (Aeja), Lee Da Hee (Mother and Daughters), plus one very adorable baby. Haeundae assistant director Kang Dae Gyu makes an impressive directorial debut, with some help from award-winning music director Lee Byung Woo (Mother, The Host) and Yoon Je Kyun who co-wrote and co-produced Harmony.

Jeong Hye (Kim Yoon Jin) is handed a ten-year sentence after accidentally killing her abusive husband. In prison, she gives birth to a beautiful baby boy who brings light into not only her life but also those of her cellmates, all of whom have unfortunate stories of their own. Jeong Hye is only allowed to keep her baby for a short period of time, and the days are counting down quickly. To earn brownie points for a day out with her son, Jeong Hye decides to start a prison choir, despite not being able to hold a tune herself. Resistance is high and singing talent low among the inmates, but the tone-deaf choir slowly find their groove and their sense of self as they come together. But the day that Jeong Hye proves herself with the choir is also the day she has to give up her son.

줄거리 (Synopsis)

Professional Review of "Harmony (DVD) (2-Disc) (First Press Limited Edition) (Korea Version)"

April 7, 2011

This professional review refers to Harmony (DVD) (English Subtitled) (Hong Kong Version)
Harmony is an inspirational tale following a female prison choir, headlined by popular actress Kim Yoon Jin of Lost fame. Marking the directorial debut of Kang Dae Gyu (who previously served as an assistant on Haeundae), the film also boasts the presence of award-winning music director Lee Byung Woo (who also worked on Mother and The Host) along with a strong supporting cast that includes Na Moon Hee (recently in Twilight Gangsters), Kang Hye Won (Haeundae), Jang Young Nam (Aeja) and Lee Da Hee (Mother and Daughters). The film's positive message certainly rang true with Korean audiences, attracting over 3 million admissions and emerging as one of the highest earning hits of 2010.

Kim Yoon Jin stars as Jeong Hye, a woman who lands a ten year stretch in jail after killing her violent husband. Whilst behind bars, she gives birth to a son, who gifts her and her cellmates with a reason to smile and believe in the future. Knowing that the child will soon be given up for adoption, Jeong Hye persuades the warden to let the inmates start their own prison choir, mainly as a means of trying to get a day out. Despite her being quite unable to carry a tune herself, the choir is surprisingly successful, and gives the women a lift in their various personal struggles. Heartbroken after having to say goodbye to her boy, Jeong Hye perseveres with her singing, hoping to be allowed to enter in a national competition.

Harmony is an unashamedly feel good film which wears its heart on its sleeve. Unsurprisingly, all of its female characters have justified reasons for their crimes - brutish spouses, sexually abusive stepfathers, love rivals killed in fits of passion, and even a wrestler who accidentally broke the neck of her cheating manager with a headlock. The film doesn't really attempt to cover difficult moral ground or to depict the harshness of prison life, aiming more for warm and humanistic drama, with plenty of sentimental back stories and flashbacks. Although this may sound dangerously saccharine, the film works well since despite being populated with a plethora of suspiciously familiar genre figures (including but not limited to a naive but kind young guard, comedy relief cellmates, elderly mother figure, and a damaged youngster with the voice of an angel) all of the women are likeable, with Kim Yoon Jin making for an earnest protagonist whose efforts to improve her life and care for her son are hard to fault.

With themes of redemption and forgiveness being very much the order of the day, the film manages to balance being somewhat believable whilst not forcibly gritty enough to undermine its feel good theme. There's a fair amount of soul searching amongst the tears and hugs, and the plot does for the most part ring true, with director Kang never laying on the melodrama too thick. Inevitably, there are plenty of tugs at the heart strings, though since there are no particularly cheap twists or too much manipulation the film is moving in an honest enough fashion.

The second half of the film does change tack somewhat, with the approaching singing contest turning it into somewhat of an underdog story. This works well, helping to maintain interest as well as getting the film out of the prison and giving Kang a chance to lightly explore issues of how society looks down on the poor women. Though the film doesn't exactly broach the subject with much depth, it does take a stab at tackling prison reformation and second chances, and this helps to distract from its inherent predictability. At this point, the singing itself takes centre stage with some impressive musical sequences after the choir having been humorously bad for much of the first hour or so. This really gives the film a lift, and its hard not to get caught up in the women's efforts to prove their worth to the outside world as well as to themselves.

As a result, Harmony makes for engaging viewing through to the end, and manages to hit all of the right emotional notes on its uplifting journey. Though it offers few surprises and does teeter on the verge of being far too nice, with its oddly pleasant jail environment, it certainly succeeds in its aim of being entertaining and moving - and to be honest, anyone who has a problem with this probably shouldn't be watching an inspirational film about a woman's prison choir in the first place.

Hymn of Redemption (part A) Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This is one remarkable women’s prison drama movie that should evoke all the viewers’ spectrum of emotions. No way based on a true story as Jeong-hye’s (Yoon-jin Kim) 18 month baby Min-woo would never be allowed to share a cell in a real prison institution, but the possibility of women prisoners singing in a choral group and performing at a city concert hall I’m sure would be possible. The story centres on Jeong-hye, who is imprisoned for killing her violent husband in defence who beats her due to her being pregnant by another man. She gives birth to her baby boy Min-woo in prison and able to keep her child their until adoptive parents are found. Jeong-hye shares a cell with her baby son and several other women prisoners (and loads of baby things!), who likewise suffer crimes of passion such as ‘mother’ figure Moon-ok (Moon-hee Na), once a music professor and jailed and on death row after killing her husband and his ‘secret’ female lover. A new arrival Yu-mi (Hye-won Kang) was sexually abused by her stepfather and killed him by hitting him over the head with a statue ornament, but the maddest is female wrestler Yeon-sil (Jun-myeon Park), who having her money stolen by her trainer, decides to teach him a lesson by a surprised neck lock, but her trainer dies which Yeon-sil didn’t expect - putting her in jail.

After watching a local choral group at the prison Jeong-hye decides to form a choral group to go outside the prison with her baby son, so asks popular friendly prison warden Na-young (Da-hee Lee) to get the prison governor’s approval, who then gives Jeong-hye 6 months to train the women. When Jeong-hye gets the go ahead she convinces Moon-ok to conduct the choir (at first reluctant due to her death sentence), but the only trouble is many of the women inmates cannot sing (apart from Yu-mi who sings like an angel). Setting up an X Factor type panel, Moon-ok pick out hopefuls into groups of alto, mezzo, sopranos et al, although only having the prison inmates the choices are limited. The X Factor type sessions are also not X promising. Even Jeong-hye cannot sing, her baby crying every time she does, making Moon-ok’s work cut out. Although the women cannot perform outside the prison, 4 years later the choral prisioners are invitied to perform at a Christmas theatre hall, an opportunity for the women to invite family members and reconcile (in song) with their loved ones who have emotionally abandoned the women for their crimes (continued on part B).

Hymn of Redemption (part B) Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This is a ‘moderate’ women’s prison film having a bright soap opera style and moderating dark, over violent or depressing themes, but well balanced with certain amount of logical pathos. The banter, laughing, crying and changing Min-woo’s nappies are all shared by Jeong-hye’s cellmates and the baby actor as Min-woo is so fascinating to watch. Normally a baby will be unware of the fact a film is being made, but not here - this kid is truly attentive like no other baby I’ve ever seen in a movie. Min-woo’s affection towards the emotionally wrecked girl Yu-mi is a sight to behold and the way he puts his arms lovingly around her is remarkable.

Being a K-movie with a young baby (women viewers will love Min-woo!), emotional melodrama surly follows and you’ll certainly empty your tissue box here, especially when baby Min-woo is adopted and the final tragic scene. But it’s balanced well with humorous and affectionate moments and the camaraderie, spirit and hopefulness this movie brings. The women bare their souls in song to re-unite with family members who need to forgive their impassioned crimes. The women inmates represent people in places you identify when you meet a new class of people, who are difficult to understand, but spending time together with them enables a strong bond to be made and that importance is expressed well here. Especially with Jeong-hye, Moon-ok and Yu-mi. When you ‘live; through it all with these women, you’ll love them so much!

Acting is superb and it goes without saying that Yoon-jin (many will know from US TV series “Lost” and K-movies “Shiri” and “Seven Days”) is a bloody good actress (one of many of course!) and again Moon-hee performs the mature mother figure with intricate emotion and intelligence. Warden Na-young is also humorously weaved into the women’s group as a sympathetic gaoler who even plays the piano for the women’s choir and well played by Da-hee Lee. But here the whole cast are perfect! This is a beautiful emo movie and certainly worth seeing. I know this is a two-part review, but that’s because this is such a good movie NOT to miss.
