Heartbreak Library (DVD) (Korea Version)

YesAsia Editorial Description

Ba:Bo and Ditto director Kim Jeong Kwon presents another uncommon romance with Heartbreak Library starring popular artists Lee Dong Wook (My Girl, The Perfect Couple) and Eugene (Unstoppable Marriage). The two leads' delightful performances and onscreen chemistry capture the film's heart-tugging story and sentiments about a young budding couple coming to terms with love and loss. Easy on the eyes and the heart, Heartbreak Library forms a photogenic essay on past memories and new beginnings, holding on and letting go.

Librarian Eun Soo (Eugene) is furious when she sees a young man, Jun Oh (Lee Dong Wook), tearing pages from books. She angrily confronts Jun Oh and ends up hearing a very curious story. Jun Oh's ex-girlfriend suddenly disappeared one day, leaving behind a note telling him to "look up page 198". As his girlfriend often checked out books from the library, the aggrieved Jun Oh has been tearing out page 198 from library books in hopes of finding an answer. Nursing a broken heart herself, Eun Soo can't help but feel an affinity to Jun Oh. Even while urging him to let go, she herself becomes increasingly drawn into his search and memories.

A significant movie Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
A simple, yet heartfelt movie between two strangers reuniting to question the meaning of love. Trapped by the illusion of the past, they struggled to forget the pain after their breakup. However, it's in the pain they shared that together they find happiness and every love that they experienced in life is a precious walk to remember.

Of Eternal Value Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
“Heartbreak Library” is a charming movie blending sublime mystery, sad tragedy and light humor. With Dong-Wook Lee as the suave but quiet Jun Oh tearing page 198’s from library books to find his ‘disappeared’ ex-girlfriend’s message and with furious Eun Soo quickly bashing him on the nose for defacing said books, begins a tender and sad (although endearing) romance story.

In the first instance you immediately surmise that Jun Oh and Eun Soo may find eventual romance by Jun Oh’s opening and reflective voice over monologue, about a young woman helping him from a deep sadness. With two people also sitting together on a bench beside the sea, the film is then brought about as one big flashback of Jun Oh’s movingly sad and reflective memory, and how he meets librarian Eun Soo. Although a sublime theme and a partially sad story this movie does have enough wit and banter, care of Eun Soo’s library colleagues, to keep it from ever getting emotionally top heavy. It’s hint of the mysterious with only sufficient pathos, yields it as a good wholesome romance movie also. Essentially this film belongs to Eugene’s Eun Soo, though, and of how her concerned heart after breaking up with her boyfriend becomes unusually piqued after watching (and hitting) Jun Oh for ruining the library books, and truly wanting to understand what made him do this.

I found the reasons for the 198 book message intriguing, as it suggests a number of additional meanings after watching. Its also an interesting theme about inspirations of hope, acceptance and eternal values (that the gift of love is within anyone) which do add to the pleasantness of the two actors here. I additionally liked the bit where the schoolgirl keeps annoying Eun Soo for Eun Soo to freak her out a bit at the end, too. But this film does have its contrasts.

Eugene acts very well. Her character doesn’t suffer fools gladly, but when you see her more clearly below the surface you realize that Eun Soo’s heart is in the right place. Dong-wook Lee as Jun Oh is quite the charming gent and even though sad here, Dong-wook still projects his good perceivable charisma.

“Heartbreak Library” is a merited Korean romance movie to highly recommend. Similarly try “Humming” and “Spring Bears Love” if you haven’t seen these. If you see this though and wonder where Eugene's elfin look is (her picture on the cover), it’s in the photo shoot extras bit. A post library heartbreak look, maybe.
