Hero (2010) (DVD) (Korea Version)

YesAsia Editorial Description

Sim Dan (Kim Hyeong Gyoo) is just that kid who gets bullied at school everyday - until an unexpected encounter turns him into a vampire. With his superhuman powers, he saves a blind person from an oncoming train, and his courageous act becomes national news. Sim Dan is now a "Hero" to everyone, but the dark force within him beckons for more.

The first feature film from director Kim Hong Ik, the 2010 Korean indie Hero offers an interesting take on the high school vampire movie. The film features the fresh young cast of Kim Hyeong Gyoo, Jan Jeong Woo, Lee Da In (Loner), and Han Ye Won (Brilliant Legacy). Popular singer Son Ho Young also makes an appearance in the film.

Bitten By The Bug (1) Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
“Hero” about school students empowered by supernatural strength after being bitten by vampires, can relate to the “Dasepo Naughty Girls” manhwa TV series and movie “Arahan” concerning unusual ‘superpowers’. “Hero”, though, revolves around love struck schoolboy Dan (Hyeong-gyoo-I Kim) and his bullied school chum Eun-seok (Jeong-woo Han), who both try to survive the mental torture of bullying at their school. Mainly it’s Eun-seok who is bullied, everyday by tough nut Cheol-seung (Min-ho Kwak), and beaten and humiliated in front of other students. Dan tries to reassure Eun-seok to be brave, but refuses to interfere, in case he also gets baseball bat treatment. Still, Dan is so preoccupied covertly video filming his old school crush, Mi-ah (Da-in Lee) about school and town, to worry about Eun-seok. Dan had wooed Mi-ah in the past and still adores her (love sick), but Mi-ah isn’t pleased with Dan’s voyeuristic tendencies when discovering him filming her at their school (cue slapped face). But Mi-ah does have a secret fondness for Dan. Later Mi-ah even introduces Dan to her dad, who terminally sick, wishes for Mi-ah to find someone to marry before he dies. But Dan’s fate is dramatically changed one night, when he confronts three men abducting a woman being sick in an alleyway. Dan watches the men drag the woman away, and follows them to a building site block. There Dan finds the sick woman and tries to assists her, but the woman suddenly leaps onto Dan and savagely bites him. Dan, blood pouring from his neck falls unconscious, having a nightmare of sitting in a bath of his own blood, but suddenly awakens in his bedroom as if nothing had happened. Dan looks in his bedroom mirror and sees two bite marks on his neck, and a sudden urge to drink blood.

At school Dan is sick, confused and troubled, as now a vampire how can he ever possibly love Mi-ah? A vampire couldn’t marry a human? He contemplates suicide, but acquiring a ‘superhuman’ strength, Dan quickly rescues a blind woman who’s pushed onto a tube station railway track, and becomes a ‘hero’ after security camera footage of Dan’s rescue deed is shown on TV news broadcasts. This fascinates Mi-ah when she sees Dan on the telly. But the heat rises (among other things), when glamorous leggy goth stunner Yoo-ri (Ye-won Han), joins the school as a teacher, who also happens to be the 150 years of age female vampire, who had bitten and turned Dan into an undead blood drinking wreck. Bitten By The Bug (2) Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Yoo-ri takes the teaching position to partly keep an eye on Dan (she’s a nice vampire who didn’t really want to hurt Dan, just desperate when his neck got in the way), and also ‘mothers’ him by fetching flasked animal blood for Dan’s school lunch, keeping him away from street blood donor agents and ‘lessons’ him about her vampire past. Yoo-ri also makes Mi-ah a little jealous. Yoo-ri’s main reason for being at the school, though, is Ga-hoo (Ho-young Son), a science teacher (and a long lost love of Yoo-ri’s), who also is a vampire who had bitten and transformed Yoo-ri 150 years ago at her rural village. With a dark dangerous evil vampire also lurking about, Yoo-ri needs to join forces with Ga-hoo to fight this nasty vampire predator. But trouble intensifies when Eun-seok, sick of being bullied by Cheol-seung, runs away from school but attacked by the Evil One. When Eun-seok suddenly reappears in Dan’s schoolroom again, he’s now a dark gothic looking vampy, and uses his new super vampire strength on Cheol-seung, as revenge for all the bullying Cheol-seung dished out on him. This makes Eun-seok bold and callous, even turning against Dan for not sticking up for Eun-seok when he was in need. In fact Eun-seok decides to take Mi-ah as his vampire ‘wife’, to punish Dan for taking all those bloody camera vids while he was getting bullied. This enrages Dan and a nasty fight between friends ensues, as Dan tries to protect Mi-ah from being transformed into a vampire. But real trouble escalates in a finale battle in the school sports hall, when Dan, Yoo-ri and Ga-hoo have to muster their true strength to combat the Dark Evil Vampire.

Due to the pretty young cast and school setting, “Hero” could interest the K-pop fan culture. The film certainly is a send up, with humorous overtones and kooky boy/girl stuff to please romantics. I found it funny when geeky Eun-seok reappears as a dark looking vampire in street cred hoody and new hairstyle; as if transforming into a vampire gave Eun-seok a cool new dress sense (similar to happiness changing appearance in the DNA?). There’s enough horror elements to interest genre fans, too. But be warned, if you don’t like ‘claret’ horror bits, the vampire ‘feasting’ could turn you off. “Hero” could work as a TV K-drama (or warrant a sequel), as the plot is left open. Yep, an interesting film, nice eye candy (Yoo-ri), comic strip manga horror style, funny bits and…vampires. Not brilliant, but fun!
