Winner of Best Cinematography and Best Music at the 39th Asian Pacific Film Festival, the 1994 feature Hwymori follows the ups and downs of a famous Korean folk singer. Director Lee Il Mok (Karuna), who himself comes from a family of folk musicians, brings the vibrant sound and spirit of traditional pansori to screen. Kim Jeong Min, who won Best New Actress at the 32nd Daejong Awards, stars as Im Rye, a young woman who pursues her passion for singing despite her parents' opposition. With the love and support of Lee Byung Ki, a teacher at the Jindo Folk Music Institute, Im Rye develops her singing talent, but the road to greatness is lined with many trials and tribulations.

< 줄거리 >
이 땅에 소리의 중흥을 바라는 이들을 위하여.
전주 대사슴놀이 판소리부분 수상자 이임례의 일대기.

1956년 전도 국악원. 유행가와 양음악에 밀려 원세가 기울어진 이곳에 남도소리판을 석권했던 이병기가 선생으로 온다. 부모의 반대에도 불구하고 소리 도둑질을 하던 이임례는 그의 거침없는 소리를 듣고 가슴 설레어하고, 그 역시 임례의 타고난 재능을 알고 대가로 만들 결심을 한다. 몇 번의 좌절 끝에 임례는 진도 군민콩쿨대회에서 우승하지만 병기는 그녀의 소리에 한이 부족하다고 판단, 강달선을 찾아 나선다. 그러나 퇴락한 달선의 모습만 확인하고 진도로 돌아오는데, 임례의 부모는 그녀를 시집보내려 한다. 병기는 기차역까지 그녀를 배웅하지만 소리인생, 소리세상에 그녀를 잡아두기 위해 인간의 연으로 끈을 묶어버린다. 그러나 역에서의 사건을 임례의 부모가 알게되자 병기와 임례는 진도를 떠나게 된다. 곧 두 사람 사이에는 아들 태백이 태어나지만 쇠잔해진 병기는 그만 세상을 떠나고 임례는 다시는 소리를 하지 않으리라 결심한다. 그러나 태백이 성장하면서 소리에 관심을 갖게 되고, 명창이 되어달라는 어머니의 유언으로 임례는 소리를 다시 시작한다.
