Commissioned by South Korea's National Human Rights Commission, If You Were Me is an innovative omnibus film project to promote tolerance and human rights and shed light on the hardships disadvantaged people face in Korea. The previous three anthologies in the series invited directors like Park Kwang Su, Park Chan Wook, Jang Jin, and Jeong Yun Cheol to helm short films, and the fourth installment released in 2009 continues the If You Were Me tradition with a collection of five shorts directed by actress-turned-director Bang Eun Jin (Princess Aurora), Jeon Gye Soo (Lost & Found), Lee Hyun Seung (Il Mare), Yoon Seong Ho (Milky Way Liberation Front), and Kim Tae Yong (Family Ties). If You Were Me 4 focuses on the issues and problems faced by youth.

Sprinkled with whimsical musical sequences and CG, Bang Eun Jin's "Blue Birds on the Desk" is about two schoolgirls with the same name, one the stressed-out top student (Nam Ji Hyun, Mapado 2) and the other the class dunce (Jeong Jin An, Epitaph), who develop an unlikely bond when they meet at a mental hospital.

Jeon Gye Soo's "U and Me" depicts the experiences and uncertainties of two students whose futures have been planned for them without their consent - stocky athlete So Young (Kwon Eun Soo), who's been weightlifting since a young age, and shy kid Cheol Gu (Hwang Gun Hee) who is being sent abroad to Australia.

In Lee Hyun Seung's "Relay" starring Park Bo Young (Scandal Makers), a classroom of students take turns caring for a baby they've snuck into the school, and try to protect the teen mother who will surely be expelled if the school finds out.

In Yoon Seong Ho's beat-boxing "The Theory & Practice of Teenage Dream", a group of students discuss their futures, and gossip about the recent death of a girl whose spirit follows them around.

Willful dreamer Cha Eun (Jeon Soo Young) takes off after her father refuses to let her transfer to a city school to continue running track in Kim Tae Yong's "Girl on the Run". Her Filipino stepmother (Arsenia B. Ngaseo) finds her, and takes her on road trip to Seoul.

Fourth outing of the “If You Were Me” social topics series concerns the hard-pressed and studious schoolgirls of S Korea. Beginning with “Bluebirds on the Desk”, is a partial musical about a top student (Ji-hyun Nam) who wishing to stay top of the class, studies so hard that she eventually suffers hallucinations and ends up in a psychiatric hospital. There she discovers the bottom class student (Eun-soo Kwon) who is so happy go lucky and couldn’t give a bottom about her studies that she similarly needs treatment for her ‘erratic behaviour’. The two girls then begin sharing joyful dreams together (ironically both girls share the same name), with some surreal results. A bit Daseapo Naughty Girls (movie) this by the catchy school song.

“U and Me” is about So Young, a girl pressured by her father to train at her local school gym to become a professional gymnastic weightlifter. But the poor girl just wants to find her own way in life, if she only knew what that ‘way’ was. Also Cheol-gu (Gun-hee Hwang) is a boy who is crestfallen when his parents decide to send him to Australia. Both So Young and Cheol-gu in dejected moods meet amidst their indecisions and frustrations of not knowing where to go in life. “Relay” features the pitfalls of teenager mothers with actress Bo-young Park (The ESP Couple) who along with two school chums try to keep a baby hidden away in their school, so to protect a teenage mother from expulsion. “The Theory and Practice of Teenage Drama” relates to students talking amongst themselves about work professions, studying and the death of a girl from their school, all situated in field surroundings with the mysterious ‘ghost’ of the dead girl getting busy in the background as the school students get all talky. Finally “Girl on the Run” showcases troubled Cha-eun (Soo-young Jeon) a girl growing up in a small Korean village whose father refuses to let her train at a sports school in Seoul. Cha-eun runs away in crestfallen state but meets her Filipino stepmother who assists her quest and dreams towards Seoul. These 5 short films feature a variety of topics about the pressures, social behaviours and concerns of Korean schoolers and will certainly resonate with younger viewers. It’s also entertaining, funny, debateable, controversial, musical and very good!
