Kim Ki Young's 1982 classic Freedom Virgin (a.k.a. Free Woman) stars Ahn So Young (Madame Emma) as an independent and free-thinking woman, Hye Ri, who has lived in Spain. Having finished college, she is now pursuing a doctorate degree in Korea. Her presence is an irritating distraction to fellow researcher Dong Sik, who believes that a woman in the laboratory leads to physical tension and reduces efficiency. Hye Ri, however, argues that physical desire and love are two different matters. She lives, breathes, and thinks completely freely - until the day she meets a zoology professor who tames her.

Born in 1919, acclaimed director Kim Ki Young grew up in Pyongyang and spent a good amount of his adulthood in Japan where he studied theater and film. In 1960, he presented The Housemaid, a disturbing psychological drama which is still voted by critics as one of the best Korean films of all time. After releasing a string of well-received films such as Chungnyeo and Ieoh Island in the 70s, Kim acquired a new interest for B-movies which got him off the mainstream market. But by the early 90s, Kim's work began to catch the attention of some diehard fans of Korean cult films, resulting in the revival of Kim's career including special screenings at numerous international film festivals. Unfortunately in 1998, Kim and his wife were killed in a house fire. Nonetheless, his legend continues in particular through many of his younger colleagues such as Kim Ki Duk, Bong Joon Ho, and Park Chan Wook who cite Kim as their great mentor.

아버지와 함께 스페인에 갔던 윤혜리는 그곳에서 대학을 마치고 박사학위 공부에 몰두하게 된다. 같은 연구실의 이동식은 혜리와 같이 연구함으로써 이성에 대한 공상과 동경 때문에 연구능률이 저하되는 것에 짜증을 낸다. 윤혜리는 동식에서 불란서 대학생들은 그런 고민이 있을 수 없다고 말한다. 학생끼리 자유로이 협조해서 생리문제를 해결한다고 말해준다. 단, 절대로 연애감정을 감수해서 이런 행위가 인생에 아무런 영향을 끼치지 않도록 이성을 가져야 한다는 것이다. 사실 혜리는 남자와의 자유로운 관계로 공부에 열중할 수 있었고 박사학위의 지목 대상이 되기도 했다. 이런 혜리에게 동식은 그러한 여성의 자유주의가 멀지않아 파탄날거라고 충고한다. 결국 윤혜리는 동물학박사에게 감혹되어 그녀의 주장이었던 자유행동을 버리고 박제나 다름없는 여자가 되고 만다.
