Land Of Scarecrows (DVD) (Special Edition) (Korea Version)

YesAsia Editorial Description

Stockbroker-turned-filmmaker Noh Kyeong Tae follows his award-winning The Last Dining Table with the equally bold and mesmerizing sophomore feature Land of Scarecrows. Screened at the 2009 Berlin Festival, the Korea-France co-production weaves a harrowing circle of love and tragedy that is both visually and emotionally captivating. Artfully shot and spare in dialogue, the film follows a Filipina woman who came to Korea to pursue her dreams. She meets and marries a Korean man only to discover that he is a transgender. She falls for another man, a young Filipino, but it turns out his adopted father is her husband.

About Movie 1

About Movie 2

About Movie 3

Synopsis

Down in the Dumps Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
In S Korea’s town of Honghae noxious landfills contaminate fields and foodstuffs making the local townsfolk feel rather off colour, suffering gender changing anomalies, skin rashes and the like. Dead wildlife is everywhere due to groundwater and soil contamination with chemically poisoned rivers causing fish to have imbalanced sex hormones (some androgynous fish having human looking faces). “Land of Scarecrows” though isn’t a mere eco film about dire landfills and bad logistics, but how terrible living conditions blight people’s healthy psyche. Here people yearn to change their apathetic conditions for personal loving relationships. Normality – a light at the end of a tunnel. But it’s not a depressing film as such as it contrasts mirthful drollness by the folk’s eccentric and desperate behaviours. Korean men looking for Filipino wives in arranged marriages than trusting hormonal imbalanced local women, plainsong woes of a transgender woman who thinks she’s a man (similar to karaoke ‘get it off you chest’ warblings) and town’s folk stoically waiting in hospital surgeries for some anti-noxious landfill medication.

After ritual scenes of Shaman women trying to curb their ‘cursed’ land from constant dead animals, fishes and moths (instead of petitioning about the blessed landfill), the dialogue sparse film soon centres on some despondent characters that parallel homelands of S Korea and the Philippines. One is Rain (Bich Phuong Thi) a Filipina from her modest but happy Filipino market district that wants to make a new life for her self in ‘infected’ Honghae and so marries Ji-young (Sun-young Kim) a ‘man’ she meets at a marriage club centre who is actually an infertile transgender woman with hormonal imbalances due to the toxic landfill. Likewise Loi Tan (Du-won Jung) an ethnic Korean-Filipino searches for his Korean adoptive father in Honghae, but then strikes up a relationship with Rain (albeit her recent marriage to transgender Ji-young) and as a big shock when he finds out who is adopted father is (as does Rain). Depending on your laughter meter and sense of irony, you’ll either find this darkly funny and a bit sardonic, or scarily portentous causing you to get worrisome over dumpsters, electric pylons, hormone tablets and fishes. Certainly awful that living places in modern society become dumping grounds by mass consumption. Hopefully butch fish turning into floozies don’t go mainstream. DVD is region ALL.
