Rabbit and Lizard (AKA: Maybe) (DVD) (Korea Version)

YesAsia Editorial Description

Popular drama stars Jang Hyuk and Sung Yu Ri pair up on the big screen for the road movie romance Rabbit and Lizard (a.k.a. Maybe). Well known as a former pop idol and the star of TV dramas like Swallow the Sun and One Fine Day, Sung Yu Ri makes her silver-screen debut as an adoptee searching for her roots in Korea. For Jang Hyuk, this is his first leading role in a Korean movie since 2004's Windstruck. Written and directed by Joo Ji Hong, Rabbit and Lizard depicts the emotional journey of two hurting people looking for the reason of being.

Korean-American adoptee May (Sung Yu Ri) has come to Korea to find the reason behind her abandonment. She encounters taxi driver Eun Seol (Jang Hyuk) who is suffering from a rare heart disease that could take his life at any moment. They take to the road together to search for May's past, guided only by her vague childhood memories of her lizard-shaped scar and his quest to find a "red rabbit".

Comes with making of, trailer, and photo gallery.

Painful but excellent tragedy romance Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Funnily enough before watching “R&L” I didn’t recognise Hyuk on the DVD back cover - he looks so different, or do I have Homer Simpsonitus? Anyway, “R&L” is quite the sombre movie with Hyuk as taxi driver Eun Seol, a man suffering a ‘broken heart’ valve condition who could die at any given stressful moment. While waiting at Seoul airport by his cab Eun Seol falls and suffers such an attack, grabbing the ankle of passing woman May (Yu-ri Sung) to help him, which she reluctantly does. But May also suffers problems. She comes to Korea from America to visit her blood parents who’d abandoned her when she was a child, her being adopted with a family in America. May’s melancholic state of separation, and having no memories of her childhood (including a mysterious creeping ‘lizard’ wound, a ‘scar’ also locked in May’s forgotten memories), gives May a strong emotional need for answers. Eun Seol eventually overcoming his intense pain then drives May to her blood parent’s address, but there May discovers from an aunt that her parents had died when May was a child; her aunt now owner of the premises. This leaves May understandably despondent, confused and lost, not sure whether to return to the US or re-tread her childhood memories and relinquish her niggling ‘lizard’ wound. She opts for the latter, finding herself within constant attention of hearty cab driver Eun Seol, who becomes genuinely concerned about May’s welfare and constantly wishes to help her. May’s despondency though nears breaking point when she finds herself at a disused train station, a place triggering terrible past memories.

This S Korean nostalgia romance as tragic and endearing similarities in part to 2004 K-movie “Someone Special”, by the overhanging threat of Eun Seol’s disease, his loveable nature contrasting with the moody May. Metaphorical aspects too; May’s lurking ‘lizard’ scar (monkey on her back/dark cloud) and blurred memory of a the red rabbit. Its lovely acted and Yu-ri is a cool site to behold in close up. Mind you Hyuk and Yu-ri’s drunken scene was a bit OTT, unless both got 'really' tipsy at a filmed after work soju drinking session. Tae-hyun Cha cameos as Eun Seol’s brother (Ji-hyon Jeon’s two “Sassy-Wind” chums!). You may shy away from “R&L” by daunting themes, but a positive allegorical ending awaits the brave and it’s an excellent film. DVD is slipcased with some excellent wide screen photo stills on the extras.
