Secret Couple (a far better title than the rather familiar and misleading My Girlfriend is an Agent) is basically a Korean take on the recent Hollywood action couple comedy thriller Mr and Mrs Smith. Strangely enough, the film was directed by Shin Tae Ra, whose previous efforts were the intense, grisly serial killer horror Black House and the offbeat Brain Wave. Here, he turns his talents to an entirely different form, backed by an appealing pair of leads in the form of genre favourite Kim Ha Neul (also in the likes of Lovers of Six Years, My Tutor Friend, and Ice Rain and Kang Ji Hwan (recently excellent in Rough Cut), who last worked together on the television series (90 Days, Time for Love).
The film begins with the nerdy Jae Joon (Kang Ji Hwan) leaving the country after tearfully dumping his girlfriend Soo Ji (Kim Ha Neul) due to her deceitful ways, not realising that she was in fact covering up a dangerous secret life as a government agent. Fast forward 3 years, and he himself is a rookie now working for a similar group, on a case involving Russian spies and a deadly virus. Conveniently enough, Soo Ji is also trying to track down the same villains, and it isn't long before their paths cross, reawakening old feelings and reopening old wounds as they try to keep the truth from each other at the same time as saving the country. Although Jae Joon is an agent too, he is a pretty useless one, and is basically still the bumbling male loser type so common in this type of comedy, with Soo Ji being confident, aggressive and spending a fair amount of the running time either shouting at him or beating him up. Thankfully, he does man up as the film progresses, losing his womanly scream in the process, and the film never slips into shrieking "sassy" territory or undermines the central premise by making his character too much of a figure of fun to make for a convincing action man. This is certainly helped by the fact that both Kang Ji Hwan and Kim Ha Neul are on good form, with a genuine chemistry between the two that makes their bickering relationship somewhat more believable. The film does show more attention to character than is usual for the genre, fleshing out the two leads somewhat, and they have a more interesting dynamic than many of their peers. This also makes things more involving, if not actually moving, and distracts from the predictable plot, which needless to say plays a very distant second place to the hi-jinks, despite a couple of fairly bizarre twists towards the end. Perhaps more importantly, director Shin Tae Ra does make an effort to inject a little more action and pace into the proceedings than might have been expected, with plenty of set pieces, most of which are generally well handled and exciting. There are quite a few good chase scenes, in particular the opening sequence, which sees Kim Ha Neul looking rather fetching in a hiked-up wedding dress pursuing bad guys on a jet ski The film also contains surprisingly little sappiness, with just a few sob story montages, and it bucks the usual trend in that instead of the final act taking a nosedive into romance and melodrama, it packs in more shoot outs and suspense. The comedy actually works quite well too, with some good capering and misunderstandings, underscored by the inevitable slapstick. Although it would be going too far to call the script clever, it is at least quite inventive in its nonsense, and there are a few very amusing gag scenes. This makes Secret Couple far more entertaining than it might otherwise have been, and one of the few films of its type to successfully mix romance, comedy and action. Although the film doesn't really offer anything new, Shin manages to keep things light and entertaining throughout, and thanks to the blend of genres and general lack of melodrama, it is likely to appeal to guys as well as girls, making for a perfect date film. by James Mudge - BeyondHollywood.com |

...from both Kim Ha Neul and Kang Ji Hwan. It certainly was glitzy, but even that, I was not entertained. It was difficult to sit through the movie and stay focused as I lost interest within the first ten minutes of the movie already. |

Very well perform by the two of them. Really love it. Kang Ji Hwan is good in drama and i never thought he is too for comedy. Want a good laugh? Then this movie is just for you. |

"Secret Couple" takes a mediocre big-budget American action/romance/comedy ("Mr. & Mrs. Smith") and remakes it as ... a mediocre big-budget Korean action/romance/comedy. Loud and frantic, this slickly-made movie delivers lots of noisy action, lots of attempts at humor (few of which I found amusing), an unconvincing romance (due in part to the fact that Kim Ha Neul and Kang Ji Hwan spend little time together), and a complicated plot involving Russian gangsters seeking to acquire a secret new weapon. Too much of "Secret Couple" seemed soulless and manufactured. |

No doubt kudos to Ha Neul for giving an action film a bash and she does a lot of her own stunts like the speed boat chase at the beginning and fight sequences. It’s quite incredible to see her doing this really. I mean this is Ha Neul, right? The actress who appeared in the quaint “Ditto” and normally in romantic dramas and comedies and now a parody of an Angelina Jolie action woman. Yes, I know, Ha Neul’s an exceptional actress and she certainly shows some gutsy thump with her ‘wedding dress’ boat chase and stunt bits, gun blasting target practice and some butt kicking and jostling with a butch female Russian agent. She ain’t bad either and it would be interesting to see Ha Neul in another more serious action drama movie (say a Lara Croft or zombie fighting Claire Redfield type ^o^). Ji Hwan Kang does a good job as the bumbling Jae Joon with his fall guy antics and buffoonery as he stresses out his deadpan police chief. This movie is all for fun and tongue in cheek though with Jae Joon more Johnny English than Jimmy Bond and Soo Ji having more girly chit-chat and love troubles than dealing with the dangerous espionage. The plot’s a parody of the “Mr and Mrs Smith” movie (which I haven’t seen), with Soo Ji spending her busy time spying with a gun strapped to her thigh but having many tiffs with her jealous boyfriend Jae Joon who mistakes her elusive spy work for seeing another fella (well she dresses as a mop lady in a gent’s toilets, so you can see his reasoning). By Soo Ji concealing her work from Jae Joon causes him to split up with her. But three years on Jae Joon then changes his job for a rookie agent, tracking the same scientist with a deadly biochemical virus canister, as Soo Ji. A lot of generic satire here so don’t expect originality and only anticipate a tongue in cheek spy thriller ride. But there’s sharp wit (I liked the secret spy camera poking through a camera advertisement picture on a newspaper as a guy spys on the virus scientist) and some James Bond references like the tape across a door to see whose broken in trick (no Soo Ji crushing bad guys heads between her thighs though). The bonus disk is packed full of stuff with some accessible without needing translated subtitles, including a girl doing marital arts action sequences (not Ha Neul though) and the stunt work. The only nice things missing are a poster shoot and VIP screening. Poster shoot? Well you’ve seen the inner DVD cover, right? |

This movie is a forced comedy. It is enjoyable, but don't expect too much. The central plot doesn't make sense and there are a lot of holes in the movie. Watch it if you're a fan of Kim Ha Neul or Kang Ji Hwan who are versatile actors in comedies and tragic stories. There are a lot of actions by Kim Ha Neul and especially close to the end of the movie which is sort of the climax. She is indeed a versatile actress who can be almost anything she wants to on screen. She can be pretty and attractive, sexy even. Kang Ji Hwan over acted a little, but it is okay. I like both of them a lot and I'm their fan. There is a little surprise at the end of the movie, not original but it makes me laugh. Guess who is Kang Ji Hwan's boss/trainer? |
