YesAsia Editorial Description

My Sassy Girl director Kwak Jae Yong strikes again with the delightful romantic action comedy My Mighty Princess. If you thought Jeon Ji Hyun could throw a punch in My Sassy Girl, get ready for Shin Min Ah's (Volcano High) performance as a present-day martial arts heroine looking for love. Co-starring young guns Ohn Joo Wan (The Peter Pan Formula, The Cut) and Yoo Gun (Operation Makeover), the film is set in a modern day world where mystical martial arts is still alive, thanks to colorful special effects and action choreography from renowned Hong Kong action director Dion Lam (Spider-Man 2, Daisy, The Storm Riders). Taking Kwak's tried-and-true sassy-heroine rom-com formula to another level with Hong Kong-style wirework, My Mighty Princess delivers action, laughter, and pure popcorn entertainment.

Hailing from a celebrated martial arts family, So Hui (Shin Min Ah) is the darling of the martial arts community with her superhuman strength and high-flying prowess. But being a martial arts prodigy isn't much help when it comes to getting handsome brooding hockey player Jun Mo (Yoo Gun) to notice her. Much to the dismay of her father (Choi Jae Seong) and longtime friend Il Young (Ohn Joo Wan), So Hui decides to quit martial arts and go manage the college hockey team. While So Hui's pining after Jun Mo who's pining after an older woman, fighting breaks out in the martial arts community as a decades-long conflict comes to a head. So Hui may be the only person who can subdue the evil Black Tiger and solve the mystery surrounding the strife.

Shin Min Ah carries it off Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
"My Mighty Princess" is all about the wide-eyed, funny-faced appeal of Shin Min Ah. Miss Shin stars as So Hui, the heir apparent to a martial arts family. Both of her parents are/were highly skilled martial artists and So Hui has been trained in fighting skills practically since her first breath. Now, however, she yearns to be a normal college girl and craves the affections of Big Man On Campus Jun Mo (Yoo Gun). Jun Mo, strangely, has eyes only for an average-looking middle-aged female police officer.

Set against the goofy efforts of super-powered So Hui to fit in on the college campus is a looming confrontation in the martial arts realm. An evil martial arts master seeks domination of the martial arts world. He takes on the reigning master, then defeats So Hui's father, with So Hui's father ending up in the hospital fighting for his life. At the same time, Il Young, a handsome young man who grew up training in the martial arts together with So Hui, returns to So Hui's life, seeking to get her to return to martial arts and also seeking her heart. But Il Young harbors a dark secret that leads to the film's fateful culmination.

The film's juxtaposition of silly antics on the college campus with serious battles in the martial arts realm creates some jarring shifts in tone. However, Shin Min Ah proves to be an irresistible heroine and the movie's central romantic story line comes to a satisfying conclusion. "My Mighty Princess" is far from being a timeless classic, but it does make for a terrific Friday night popcorn flick.

A Super Hit! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
What with this gem and the excellent “A Man Who Was Superman” I’ve had a great weekend watching K-movies.

“My Mighty Princess” for one is a wonderful rom-com movie with a poetically rendered martial arts display care of the brilliant Dion Lam! Directed by Jae-yong Kwak of “My Sassy Girl” fame he certainly weaves magic, too. At first looking at the DVD cover I imagined a total comedy hi-jinks romance. But here is a spectacular interplay of sword and sorcery fantasy and ‘Matrix’ type martial arts gymnastics mixed with modern and humorous youth romance. Sort of like “Arahan” blended with “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”. It features remarkable actress Min-ah Shin (who I just loved in “Volcano High”) as the ‘Mighty Princess’ Soo Hui, who as to put male boyfriends on hold to confront a mystical warrior. With fantastic martial arts tree top fights and a final romantic duel, this is a film you’ll replay a few times. Although mainly for its spectacular action sequences, “My Mighty Princess” features much additional charm relating to Min-ah’s romantic determinations and chumming up with her long time martial arts friend Il Young.

Min-ah’s ‘mighty princess’ tag though is related to So Hui’s uncanny super heroine strength from traditional marital arts skills taught by her father. But at her father’s chagrin, So Hui ditches her mystical training to live as a modern everyday girl and woo leather clad biker and ice hockey player Jun Mo. But when her father requires So Hui’s Lightening Sword power to retrieve a stolen Chinese sword, So Hui must return to her Japanese RPG type fighting skills to battle it out and obtain the sword. With her close friend Il Young as her aid.

Loaded with Chinese flavored high wire tree top action where you could expect Ziyi Zhang to fly in any moment and gangster fights to leave “The Lovers” K-TV drama wanting, its an action packed romance! It’s funny too! Like the way So Hui and Ill Young alter their appearance to tackle a mob of gangsters. The mid point college school hi-jinks scenes between Min-ah and Joo Wan Ohn (Il Young) are also endearing!

If you love HK martial arts movies or films like “Arahan” and “Volcano High”, with mild romantic humour this is worth seeing! Certainly a re-watch able and features a great musical OST! With the final poetic duel sequence in a field and the emotion regarding the plot, this finishes fantastic.
