YesAsia Editorial Description
Suk Hyun (Ji Jin Hee) is a promising young judge with a loving family and a promising future ahead. However, his life is shattered when his wife is murdered in cold blood. The case appears to be closed when Su Yung (Ha Jung Woo, The Chaser), who has a grudge against Suk Hyun for a previous case, is arrested and charged as the prime suspect with the help of prosecutor Gang Sung (Lee Jong Hyuk, Crush and Blush). However, a reporter approaches Suk Hyun and proves to him that he may be living the parallel life of another young judge from 30 years ago. If what the reporter says is true, then Suk Hyun has 16 days before Su Yung escapes from jail to kill him and his daughter.

줄거리 (Synopsis)

Professional Review of "Parallel Life (DVD) (First Press Limited Edition) (Korea Version)"
|
Parallel Life is a film with an interesting concept, that certain people can find themselves repeating the lives of others from years gone by, following the same series of events towards the same fate. Inevitably, director Kwon Ho Young and writer Han Jeung Ae use this idea to propel their protagonist, played by actor Ji Jin Hee (recently in the violent Soo) into an increasingly desperate situation, and as such the film is an interesting attempt to mix thrills and philosophy.
Ji Jin Hee plays Suk Hyun, a young judge rising fast up the ladder, who is known for making tough and uncompromising decisions. His carefully ordered life is thrown into chaos after his wife is brutally murdered, apparently by a former criminal called Su Yung (Ha Jung Woo, The Chaser) with a grudge against him for a past ruling. It soon becomes apparent that the case is far from closed, as a reporter contacts Suk Hyun, informing him that his life appears to be following the exact same path of another judge some 30 years back - a prediction which means that Su Young will shortly escape from jail to murder him and his daughter. With the help of prosecutor Gang Sung (Lee Jong Hyuk, also in the superb Crush and Blush), he desperately tries to stop this from happening whilst uncovering the dark truth behind the death of his unfortunate predecessor. Parallel Life gets off to an engaging start, disorientating the viewer and dropping plenty of ominous hints as to the coming storm. It quickly becomes clear that writer director team Han and Kwon are aiming for a more thoughtful thriller than average, and they achieve this very well, keeping the film moving along at a good pace, whilst spending a fair amount of time exploring the central premise. The whole parallel life theory itself is quite fascinating, playing upon themes of coincidence and fate, and it helps to build tension and feelings of paranoia as the layers of the plot and its various conspiracies are skilfully unwrapped. Even if the viewer doesn't buy into this gambit, it still gives the film an involving structure and a definite momentum as it rushes towards its climax, with plenty of revelations and twists. Some of these don't quite work, and the film does try to pack in a few too many obviously Hitchcockian character reversals and red herrings into the last third, though it remains entertaining and gripping even when straining belief somewhat. Ji Jin Hee does a solid job in the lead role, with his initially unlikeable judge becoming gradually more sympathetic as the film goes on, not least due to the never ending series of trials and torments which befall him. Kwon's direction is tight, and the film's action scenes help to add some well handled excitement that nicely offset its more ponderous moments, mostly in the form of chase scenes, with a few sudden shots of violence. As the film picks up speed during its latter stages, the camera work gets more kinetic, with some fast editing that thankfully never overdoes things with needless flashiness. The film does get pretty dark once all cards are on the table, and although the ending itself is fairly predictable, it still manages to end on a satisfyingly grim and ambiguous note, enough so to keep the viewer thinking after the credits have rolled. All of this combines to mark Parallel Life as a superior suspense thriller, and as a film which proves that it is perfectly possible for genre efforts to be both exciting and thought provoking. Kwon Ho Young and writer Han Jeung Ae prove to be a potent team, turning what in other hands could have been a fairly silly high concept actioner into something far more rewarding. by James Mudge - BeyondHollywood.com |

A bit confusing
|
At first, will you have a hard time understanding the story....but as the movie progresses, it will show you two different time of two different people. What happened several years ago happened again in the same exact order. I actually liked the twist of the story... it is only in the end that you will be able to understand the true killer of the film. I give am 8/10. |

A Dark Replay of Events
|
“Parallel Life” isn’t a mere story of murder repeating itself due to a personal grudge or a type of psychological serial murder (although partly the case, too), but a parapsycholical thriller of 'parallelism' where dark events repeat themselves each side of a 30 year time line. Seok-hyun Kim (Jin-hee Ji) is appointed presiding judge due to his youthful fresh ideologies and celebrates his new career move with his wife Yoon-kyeong (Se-ah Yoon), little daughter Ye-jin (Sa-rang Park) and working associates at his home. But at the celebration Seok-hyun receives a sinister phone call by a man who threatens the lives of his family, and after the celebration, Seok-hun’s wife is found murdered at a local mountain range. Seok-hyun also meets a female reporter who later tells him about another young judge named Han in 1979 whose wife had also been murdered on the same date and time 30 years ago. Seok-hyun’s fate then begins to tragically duplicate, in minute details, the same pattern as the young judge Han in 1979, paralleling all situations of Seok-hyun’s darkest hours. Seok-hyun receives more threats from the sinister phone caller, later caught by the police and named as Soo-yeong (Jeong-woo Ha in ‘baddy’ mode again) who as a grudge against Seok-hyun’s professional judgement. But Seok-hyun learns that in ‘79 an arrested assailant connected to Han’s wife’s murder was later released by the police and murdered judge Han at his home. Fearing his own fate will end the same, Seok-hyun endeavours to prove Soo-yeong’s guilt and protect his little daughter at all costs, until a blighting dark secret is revealed turning everything in Seok-hyun’s life upside down. Pulse racing moments here (a bit K-movie “Seven Days”) with a plot to keep you gripped to the very twisted end. As with most thrillers, crucial information is left out till the finish with only a revealing succession of bite sized revelations concerning judge Han’s full murder in 1979, to keep Seok-hyun’s ‘parallel’ situation suspenseful. No doubt “Parallel Life” as food for thought about life itself as being a mere mystery thriller with a twist. Does the past replay itself through people for a reason or does even the past itself really exist? Thoughts of the implicate as much as the explicate I think (you’ll have to read David Bohm books to know what I mean there). An unusual mystery thriller with well-crafted acting by Jin-hee Ji, Kang-seong Lee and Byeong-eun Park. Highly recommended! |
