YesAsia Editorial Description

From Kim Sung Soo, director of the epic Musa: The Warrior, comes a decidedly different kind of film - the delightful, hilariously offbeat romantic comedy, Please Teach Me English! Lee Na Young, star of Who Are You? and Someone Special, plays Young Ju, a cute, bespectacled public official who is forced to take English lessons, so at least one employee at the office is bilingual! After much hesitation, Young Ju signs up for English lessons, and soon enough, the adventure begins!

In the class, Young-Ju meets Cathy (Angela Kelly), the pretty teacher from Australia, as well as Moon Su (Jang Hyuk of Volcano High), who takes on the English name Elvis, thanks to his ridiculously long sideburns. While Young Ju (now rechristened "Candy") takes a liking to Elvis, it seems he's too busy making obvious passes at their teacher to care. But as shallow as Elvis seems, it turns out he's got a real reason for being in class. He has a sister who was put up for adoption and soon she'll be visiting both Elvis and his aged mother. Since his mother won't be able to communicate with the English speaking daughter, it's up to Elvis to learn the language before the three of them reunite. But when Candy misunderstands Elvis' reasons for learning English, will she give in to her jealousy and ruin everything? Or is their hope for this screwball couple? The answer to these questions and more await you in this wacky, intensely likable film! Thanks to a charming performance from the adorable Lee Na Young, Please Teach Me English is one romantic comedy that goes straight to the head of the class!

Korean humor and English vocabulary in motion
If you thought entering a classroom for Koreans trying to brush up their English couldn't be fun, I am afraid you will have to remodel your statement after watching Please Teach Me English whose charming humor is sure to make you smile.

Young Joo (Lee Na Young), who works as a junior civil servant in a government office, lives a carefree life with her colleagues until an English-speaking person walks in the office looking for help. When she is unable to make head or tail of what he is saying, her boss sentences her to obligatory English lessons. Initially unwilling to accept her fate, she changes her mind when she runs into her hunk of a classmate Moon Soo (Jang Hyuk).

The outstanding parts in Please Teach Me English are no doubt the memorable performances by the leads, especially Lee Na Young. The scene in which she gets drunk and asks Moon Soo for his mobile number in a teasing manner alone was already worth the admission fee, and I am still delighted when I think of the responding expressions of disbelief by Moon Soo and the bystanders.

As for the film's leading actor, Jang Hyuk, he also does a very convincing job as womanizer who never misses an opportunity to impress women from all walks of life with his honey-sweet talk. Last but not least, I also found myself tempted to say words like Brazil and Italy with added nuance and body motion as is so superbly demonstrated by the film's students and of course their teacher, Catherine Presley (Angela Kelly).

What Please Teach Me English all comes down to is an over the top comedy that successfully incorporates techniques like dream passages, computer graphics, and comic bubbles to tell its story. There also is a predictable eventual shift into more romantic dimensions, but director Kim Sung Soo manages to keep the degree of amusement at about the right level, which prevents everything from being excessively schmaltzy. Overall, Please Teach Me English provides a merry viewing experience you shouldn't miss.

so cute! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
this movie is so funny and goofy! its really fun and realistic, because learning english is SO important in korea right now. i liked watching it because it really relates to how hard some korean americans are working to learn korean (like me!) so I could relate to a lot of scenes in the movie, from the foreigner perspective. I also really enjoyed the integration of a korean adoptee into the movie, which was realistic and not overdramatic (she couldn't speak korean at all, just like many of us adoptees) I LOVE THIS MOVIE!

A must see! Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
I really like watching this movie. It is so funny yet there are little scenes from time to time that makes you almost want to cry. Basically it's about a nerdy girl who goes to a class to learn english for her job and in the process she finds her prince. The thing is that he doesn't really see her as a girlfriend so she eventually ends up giving up after trying to impress him in possible ways. However...the ending is that....nah...i'm not going to ruin it. Watch it for yourself.

Definately worth watching Customer Review Rated Bad 7 - 7 out of 10
This is a great movie to watch if you ever had any experience with learning another language. As an English teacher in Korea, I totally could relate to the feelings of fear as Lee NaYoung sets out to learn a new language. The level tests are hilarious! The supporting cast is also very funny.
