YesAsia Editorial Description

True to its curious title, Rolling Home with a Bull is a charming road movie following the allegorical journey of a man, a woman, and a bull. Based on a novel by Kim Do Yeon, the quirky drama from Forever the Moment director Lim Soon Rye premiered at the 2010 Pusan Film Festival. Kim Young Pil (Closer to Heaven) and Kong Hyo Jin (Crush and Blush) are the former lovers who bicker and bond on their bovine-accompanied trip from the countryside to Seoul. Filled with eccentric characters, deadpan humor, and gentle questions, their unexpected adventures take on the mellow guise of a Buddhist pilgrimage, backdropped by the music of Peter, Paul, and Mary.

Bachelor poet Seon Ho (Kim Young Pil) wants to sell his father's prized bull, but the price offered to him at the local cattle market is too low. He decides to comb the country to find another buyer. On the road, he hears of his friend's death from widow Hyun Soo (Kong Hyo Jin), who is also Seon Ho's former girlfriend. Seon Ho ends up heading to the funeral with the cow in tow.

Professional Review of "Rolling Home With a Bull (DVD) (Korea Version)"

March 18, 2011

Although it might seem like an odd title, the Korean road movie Rolling Home with a Bull really is about just that, following a man on a road trip with a bull. Adapted from a novel by Kim Do Yeon, the film was directed by Lim Soon Rye, who previously helmed the award winning women's handball outing Forever the Moment and most recently the humanist drama Fly, Penguin. Having premiered at the 2010 Pusan Film Festival, his latest effort is a very different affair, mixing human drama, comedy and spiritual themes, headlined by talented stars Kim Young Pil (Closer to Heaven) and Kong Hyo Jin (Crush and Blush).

The film follows Kim as farmer and aspiring poet Seon Ho, a man frustrated by his failure to make anything of himself, who takes out his anger by stealing his father's prize bull. When he fails to sell the mild mannered beast at market he wanders the countryside in search of a buyer, until contacted by former lover Hyun Soo (Kong), who informs him that her husband, and his best friend, has died. After meeting him at the funeral, she decides to tag along with Seon Ho and the bull as their winding journey takes them towards Seoul.

Rolling Home with a Bull really is an appropriate title, as the film is a laid back affair that gently meanders along, with lots of drinking and conversation as Seon Ho has various encounters with oddball characters. The film certainly does pack in an impressive amount of soju swigging, with both Seon Ho and Hyun Soo spending a fair percentage of their time good and drunk. The two make for believably human and flawed figures, basically likeable despite their bumbling and near-constant bickering, and their developing relationship is not a conventional one. The film never really veers off into romance, choosing instead to use their past and present bonding as part of Seon Ho's personal journey and awakening. Thankfully, none of the supporting cast are too bizarre or cheaply eccentric, though they are a funny bunch, and this does make the film very amusing in places, though without any obvious gags to speak of.

Unsurprisingly, the film is an allegorical affair and is laden with symbolism throughout. Given the importance of cows in Buddhist teachings, the bull itself obviously plays a large part in this, with scenes of it being ridden by a small child, and its becoming increasingly important to Seon as a possible cipher for his quest for acceptance and harmony. The supporting cast are similarly utilised, with most of them playing recurring roles or turning up in dreams and visions to impart strange advice. The film is very effective in this regard, and director Lim never overplays his hand, though the final act does get a little obscure in its ambiguity. Overall though, the viewer doesn't need to be familiar with Buddhism to enjoy the film or to get the general gist, and in either case it's definitely one which requires a touch of meditation to figure out its meaning.

Lim's direction fits the material perfectly, being quiet and unobtrusive, with a naturalistic camera that mainly just sits back and leaves the characters to their business. At the same time, the film is pleasingly cinematic, with some picturesque scenery as Seon Ho and the bull make their way through remote villages, wooded mountains, rolling beaches, and finally to the big city. The soundtrack, featuring songs by Peter, Paul, and Mary is very apt, and as well as providing a reflection of the past central relationship between Seon Ho, Hyun Soo and her dead husband, it again underlines the film's affably philosophical nature.

Rolling Home with a Bull is a film which makes the viewer think and which does ask a number of interesting questions, though in an understated manner which makes it more accessible and enjoyable than others which have tried to hammer their messages home. The film also works very well on a more basic road movie level, with interesting and likeable characters, and plenty of amusing moments en route to its existential conclusion.

Separation, a Mystical Journey and a Bull (A) Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Hyo-jin surly must think “Hmm, I know I’ve performed many ‘don’t take any bullsh*t’ women parts, now here I am roaming around with a big male bull”. (LOL). True though, for those who may not have seen Hyo-jin’s films/TV dramas, her kick-ass portrayals have been feisty to say the least. Hyon-jin though is warm and down to earth (with some more versatile roles of late), a great person/actress and a complete contrast to her ‘don’t give me any bullocks’ stuff (I remember her school food distaste in “Memento Mori”. Well, indoctrination can taste like that!). “Rolling Home..” however is a dry humoured romance retrospective, cruising at a leisurely pace to a symbolic and mystical Buddhist meditation, reflecting the ‘solid world’ to be mere illusion. Revolving mostly around Sun-Ho (Young Pil Kim), who goes on a bull trek after getting fed up working for his parents as a farm hand, hassled about settling down with a wife from his mum, and derided by his dad concerning Sun-ho’s fondness for poetry. When a fight breaks out with Sun-ho at a poetry competition (and considering the other ‘mill stone’ stuff), abstractness taking its toll, Sun-ho decides to ‘steal’ his dad’s bull, shoving him the back of a herd truck and goes all roady, intending to sell the bull for good cash. Peeved at an initial low offer, Sun-ho continues to search for a better deal, ringing his dad to assure him he’ll only sell the bull for a good offer (Although dad is predominantly shocked by the fact his son pinched his bull!! Never mind a good offer!).

On his journey Sun-ho receives a cell phone call from his ex-flame Hyon-Soo (Hyo-jin), who’d left him embittered when she dumped him and married his best friend ‘Peter’ (three close friends naming themselves after folk group Peter, Paul and Mary) and tells Sun-ho (a.k.a. Paul) that her husband had recently died in an accident. So Sun-ho drives to the funeral home (with his dad’s bull) and meets up with Hyon-soo (a.k.a. Mary) to comfort her and reflect upon old past times. Sun-ho still loves Hyon-soo, although detached over his burnt out emotions about her ditching him, whereas Hyun-soo doesn’t want him to hate her but regards Sun-ho selfish in his feelings (i.e he’s as stubborn as a bull!). But they both share pleasant humour (getting drunk and giggly on Soju); Hyon-soo mentioning her three bum moles she’s no one to show to anymore now Peter had died; Sun-ho mentioning his bull and Hyon-soo taking a liking to the big bulky fella.

Separation, a Mystical Journey and a Bull (B) Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
As Sun-ho’s journey continues (with Hyon-soo popping up like a genie now and again), he travels to a Buddhist monastery to seek guidance for his troubled soul (a monastery called OhMyGod would you believe! Buddhist?), but his bull wanders off while he sips more wine with the head monk. Later, a man begs Sun-ho to let his son ride his bull (Holy fortune maybe?). But mostly Sun-ho is plagued by his brittle thoughts over Hyon-soo; having dreamy memories of himself with Sun-ho and Peter at a beach when life seemed good. Mostly this symbolic ‘story’ has a play like style with ‘dream’ type character interactions of past and present, reflected in Sun-ho’s mirrored life by all the people he meets. Sun-ho tries to quell his disappointments and anger relating to Hyon-soo’s marriage to his best mate, his ‘hate’ of Hyo-soo’s rejection, but deep desire to re-unite Hyon-soo as his soul mate (but Oneness is a better bet, right?) Later in the movie a young Buddhist boy echoes Sun-ho’s spiritual condition (with no mirrored anger makes for a peaceful soul) at a ceremony. Hyon-soo eventually accepting his life is illusion, sets fire to the monastery to break ‘life’s facade’. But Sun-ho only dreams of doing this, the monastery already having been damaged (seemed a little like video game “The 3rd Birthday” here).

The bull plays centre stage (holy maybe, but symbolic of Sun-ho’s laziness and stubbornness perhaps), alongside obvious themes of re-birth, marriage, love, separation and death. It’s not a depressing film, though, but certainly quirky, funny and laid back. In fact so laid back I’m surprised the OhMyGod temple didn’t sell symbolic hammocks to ‘watch this film in’ (so you can meditate about re-awaking to Oneness! All things connected, type of thing). The bull is super cool, though, like a docile sloppy great dane. In fact if this bull saw a red flag and a matador I’m sure he’d think ‘sod that for a game of chess I’m comfortable here chewing the grass or being driven about in this nice countryside. (LOL). A plot for your inner muse, certainly, but I will emphasis it does have a Slumbering Pace. Hyo-jin is maturing by each film, and does again here to, but I felt that she was underused and sometimes looked as bored as the bull (sorry Hyo-jin). Alas, no additional DVD extras with this version. Interesting ‘meditative’ film though.
