YesAsia Editorial Description
After four years of delays, the long-awaited Korean romance Sa-Kwa finally hit theaters in 2009. Written and directed by Kang Yi Kwan who was previously assistant director on Memento Mori, Sa-Kwa stars award-winning actress Moon So Ri (Forever the Moment, Peppermint Candy) as a married woman caught between two men played by popular actors Kim Tae Woo (The Naked Kitchen) and Lee Seon Gyun (Our Town). The moving film explores the meaning and rituals of romance and marriage through one woman's roller-coaster experiences in love.
After getting dumped by her long-time boyfriend Min Suk (Lee Seon Gyun), Hyun Jung (Moon So Ri) serendipitously meets Sang Hoon (Kim Tae Woo). Touched by his devotion, Hyun Jung happily marries Sang Hoon, but the honeymoon soon ends when fundamental differences in their views of love and marriage emerge. While Hyun Jung struggles to come to terms with her husband and marriage, Min Suk suddenly shows up again, and he wants Hyun Jung back.

Honest picture of contemporary relationships
Honest picture of contemporary relationships

I was a bit misled by YesAsia's description of this film as "lighthearted" and a "romance". While there certainly are lighthearted moments in the movie's first half, "Sa-Kwa" primarily is a depressing (but very realistic) film about people destroying their relationships through selfishness. At the center of the film is Hyun Jung (Moon So Ri), whose thoughtlessly self-centered nature drives her longtime beau Min Suk (Lee Seon Gyun) to break off their relationship. Min Suk later criticizes himself for being selfish, believing that he could no longer put Hyun Jung's interests ahead of his own. On the rebound from her break-up, Hyun Jung hooks up with Sang Hoon (Kim Tae Woo), who works in the same building as her and has been pursuing her diligently. After what seems like a whirlwind romance, Sang Hoon and Hyun Jung marry. Once they are hitched, Hyun Jung's needy nature and Sang Hoon's careerist impulses drive them apart. For the viewer, watching this unpleasantness unfold is a bit like watching a slow-motion trainwreck; it's painful to see, but almost impossible to avert your eyes. At root, the characters fail to grasp that true love means putting your partner's needs ahead of your own, giving oneself unconditionally. (Hyun Jung is depicted as being a nominal Christian; it is unfortunate that she did not take her faith more seriously or she would have learned this basic lesson.) "Sa-Kwa" is an honest, unsparing, and well-made film, with solid performances from its three lead actors. The ugliness of its characters' interior lives is reflected in the ugliness of the Korea we see in the film, a Korea of ugly factories, oppressive cityscapes, deafening traffic noise, and leaden skies. The film ends with a wonderfully tender coda, yet the moment's ambiguous nature leaves the viewer wondering whether the characters really have learned the lessons of their past failures or are simply perpetuating their mistakes. Recommended highly for those willing to put themselves through an emotional wringer. |
