YesAsia Editorial Description

Sex is Zero, the wild, raunchy sex comedy that exploded the Korean box office with over 4.5 million moviegoers in 2002, unveils its sequel Sex is Zero 2. Prepare for an upgraded suite of sexual gags and bathroom humor surrounding a bunch of hormone-raging college students. All of the original gang is back in action for the second installment with the exception of Ha Ji Won who makes a brief cameo appearance in the opening scene. Leading the pack of testosterone-wired hyenas are Lim Chang Jung (Scout) and Choi Sung Kook (Master Kims) who offer plenty of ad-libs (and libidos!) throughout the film. The sequel sold 1.5 million tickets in just two weeks with much media buzz over its sexual content, language, and nudity, plus the film's new additions Song Ji Hyo (Wishing Stairs) and Lee Hwa Seon (Seducing Mr. Perfect). Keeping in tune with the current trend, the visually enticing aerobic girls from the original are now flashing more flesh than ever as varsity swimmers and the martial arts club is sporting more kicks and punches as a K-1 fight club. Also be sure to indulge in a little guilty pleasure as the film's funniest bloopers roll out during the end credits. Though not for the faint of heart as many of the scenes are larded with shocking, in-your-face sexual innuendoes, the film sprinkles in some heartwarming, tender moments that makes this comedy classic sweeter the second time around.

How to advance beyond first base? That's what Eun Sik (Lim Chang Jung) wants to know. Although into the third year of their relationship, Eun Sik and his curvaceous varsity swimmer girlfriend Kyung Ah (Song Ji Hyo) have yet to venture beyond the kissing stage. Deeply frustrated, Eun Sik explores other ways of relieving himself from the growing demands of his raging hormones with a little assistance from a naked female statue outside campus. Appalled at his friend's desperate and somewhat embarrassing measure, playboy Sung Kook (Choi Sung Kook) comes to Eun Sik's rescue and offers his invaluable "wisdom" on making a home run, but Eun Sik's new behavior shocks Kyung Ah. Just as Kyung Ah's agonizing over why her wholesome boyfriend has suddenly turned into a pervert, dashing prosecutor Ki Joo shows up to sweep her off her feet with his suave lady-killer charm, signaling the start of a very tight race for the bed

Professional Review of "Sex Is Zero 2 (DVD) (English Subtitled) (Hong Kong Version)"

September 24, 2008

This professional review refers to Sex is Zero 2 (DVD) (First Press Edition) (Korea Version)
Given the massive success of Sex is Zero back in 2002, a sequel was always inevitable, and now, finally, Sex is Zero 2 arrives to challenge the sensibilities of viewers everywhere. Unsurprisingly, returning director Yoon Je Kyun was keen to raise the bar from the original, which in this case basically translates to even more sex, nudity and bad taste gags. The formula proved every bit as successful the second time around, with the film managing to notch up an impressive 1.5 million admissions in the first two weeks of release, proving that not all Korean comedies need be cute and fluffy to succeed.

The plot, such as it is, follows Eun Sik (Lim Chang Jung, also in the original, and recently in Scout), who has been dating sexy swimmer girlfriend Kyung Ah (Song Ji Hyo, in a very different role to that she played in Wishing Stairs) for three years without managing to get her into bed. Needless to say, this situation drives the poor man to a number of odd extremes as he tries to relieve his frustrations in a variety of increasingly desperate ways. After a handsome face from her past shows up and attempts to sweep her off her feet, he turns to his friends for advice, though most of them are either wrapped up in their own troubled relationships or are simply too crazy to do anything but complicate matters further.

Basically, Sex is Zero 2 is a faithful retread of its predecessor, following the same plot and even aping some of its gag scenes - not that this is a bad thing by any means, especially since the years since its release have not produced anything with the same successful brand of raunchy humour. For the most part the plot is entirely negligible, mainly revolving around the question as to when Eun Sik and Kyung Ah will finally have sex, interspersed with subplots about the other characters' bizarre and colourful relationships. Certainly, the swimming theme has quite blatantly only been included as an excuse to show the female cast members in skimpy costumes. Similarly, the K1 tournament seems like little more than an afterthought, and only comes into play during the climatic scenes - though it does at least make for some amusing physical comedy, with plenty of blows below the belt thrown in for good measure.

What matters here are the gags, and the film is certainly big on laughs, at least for those not afraid to let their minds stray to the gutter and whose stomachs and sensibilities are not easily shocked. The sexual content is certainly very graphic, with a great deal of sex and nudity, and with an extensive catalogue of risque jokes revolving around blow-up dolls, transvestites, bodily fluids, and lollipops being inserted where the sun most definitely does not shine. Despite this, the film is by no means misogynistic, or even particularly sexist, as the male cast members tend to end up naked every bit as often as their female colleagues, and are subject to the same barrage of abuse. As such, although it does wallow in gross out humour for the most part, the film is never mean spirited or cruel. Director Yoon shows a great sense of comic timing, and though of the lowest common denominator possible, at least some of the laughs are reasonably clever. If nothing else, the film definitely deserves some kind of award for the sheer number and variety of wacky sexual escapades, covering pretty much every situation imaginable.

As with the original, the laughs pretty much disappear during the last twenty minutes, as the plot turns serious, actually heading into some pretty dark, tragic territory as it attempts to make the switch to heavy drama. Surprisingly, this works very well, mainly due to the fact that although the characters have inevitably been played mainly for laughs during the running time, Yoon ensures that both Eun Sik and Kyung Ah never become jokes themselves, retaining a modicum of believability and depth, and with their relationship somehow managing to come across as being sweet and genuine. As a result, the film ends on a strangely moving note, arguably more so than with other, straight or serious efforts. It certainly helps that the cast are a generally likeable bunch and turn in game performances, putting on admirably brave faces despite the cavalcade of humiliations and disrobings they endure.

Of course, it's fair to say that the only real depths in Sex is Zero 2 are those that it plumbs, something that it does with enthusiasm and saucy inventiveness. On a par with, if not particularly discernable from the original, it guarantees a good time for broadminded viewers looking for unrestrained laughs and is one of the funnier Korean comedies of recent years.

SIZ2 - naughty frolics with serious bits Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
(I watched this aaages ago, but never posted review. So here it is!) If you enjoyed the carry on antics of director Tae-yun Yun’s first innocent and daft SIZ movie, there's a good chance his second outing will also be to your favour (or not). Actor Chang-jung Im is the only person to really fill the shoes of Korea’s quirky, loveable oddities and he deliveries brilliant humour and concerned feelings yet again as Eun Sik. Most of the original "Sex is Zero" cast are featured apart from Ji Won Ha, but the antics haven’t changed much. Eun Sik’s hormones are still sexually frustrated, the guys and gals are as bonkers as ever (in more ways than one) and the sexual innuendo and situation comedy is what you’d expect from a SIZ; here though from slow gyrating aerobic ladies to female swimming instructors. Eun Sik cannot get any sex from his girlfriend Ah Kyung (really! love is 100%) so he has to provide other means of sexual expression by either getting drunk and then sleeping on the butt of a naked woman statue at the university campus or getting into Sunk Kook’s bad blow up doll ways (again!), although at least the latter is softer! But local campus swimming team ladies come to the rescue of the guys, with their various madcap antics of juvenilia and pet jealousies. Especially when a tall, curvy female swimming instructor enters and grabs Eun Sik’s attention (innuendo intended) and the other guys. (Kookiest bit is when one of the swimming instructor’s male army boyfriends goes AWOL to have a sex change, but then as a woman, falls in love with the woman’s friend).

Actress Ji Hyo Song as Ah Kyung is really very good, and her unhappy past reveals a bit more of a darker situation than the previous SIZ movie with sexual abuse as a theme here. Fair bit of nudity, too, (well, upper pectoral muscles anyway) but could their ever be a Sex is Zero 3? Well, if there is maybe next time we’ll witness an exploding blow up doll. Extras are quite funny, too! The one thing I love about Sung Kook Choi is his infections laughter on the bloopers; he’s surely the best corpser in K-dom. Brilliant! I loved his infectious laughter in "Oh My God 2", too! You just know that doing madcap scenes with a serious mien, Sung Kook is soon going to let rip off camera (well, caught on camera for the out-takes). So, more sizzely sex and hot campus shenanigans to ‘zero in on’ here and plenty of laughs and serious bits, too! Luckily no teary bits, so no need for the tissues, ahem, well…
