Tenshi AKA: Angel (Hong Kong Version)

YesAsia Editorial Description

Erica Sakurazawa's mega popular manga Tenshi gets translated to the big screen in director Miyasaka Mayumi's live action version! Uchida Asahi (2005's Shinku) stars as Kato, a regular boy working a thankless job at a convenience store. At a local bar, he crosses paths with a beautiful girl named Tenshi (Kyoko Fukada, from Kamikaze Girls and Ringu 2) and tries to pick her up. However, little does he know that Tenshi, as her name suggests, is an honest-to-goodness angel, in the most literal sense of the word!

Although she may seem like just another normal gal with an affinity for gin and lime, it isn't long before Tenshi sprouts a pair of fluffy white wings, a move which gives ample evidence of her divine origins. Even more interesting is the fact that Kato is one of the select few who can see her. But before Kato can even come to terms with everything that has happened, Tenshi abruptly moves into his home, disrupting the quiet solitude of his beloved bachelor pad!

Soon Kato realizes that she has a knack for touching people's hearts and transforming their lives for the better. In her many adventures, Tenshi encounters troubled people, both young and old, and tries to bring joy to their lives. Along the way, she finds that she just might be able to help Kato as well, in ways neither could expect! Starring Nagasaku Hiromi, Mirsako Ei, and Koide Saori and featuring a theme song performance from Otake Yuki (who also appears in the film), Tenshi is one live action update that's so good it seems heaven-sent!

Who knew angels love booze? Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
"Tenshi" (a.k.a. "Angel") interweaves four stories, using the common thread of a lovely angel (Kyoko Fukada) who unexpectedly drops into different people's scarred lives to give them a chance at happiness. The four stories include (a) a lonely convenience store worker smitten by a beauteous girl who has lost her cat, (b) a divorced man whose limited free time is torn between his kindergarten-aged daughter and his supportive girlfriend, leaving both daughter and girlfriend to question his devotion to them, (c) a bullied high school girl contemplating suicide, and (d) a pair of sisters, one of whom loves to sup gin and lime drinks (which instead tend to get consumed by the angel) and the other of whom is a teetotaller.

As my description of the fourth of these stories may suggest, the movie never does much of anything with this pair of sisters; nothing would have been lost if they'd been left out. The other three stories offer many opportunities for sentimental tugs at the ol' heartstrings. Fortunately, "Tenshi" manages to provide most of those tugs with a bit of freshness. The movie is aided by an attractive cast giving finely-tuned performances.

"Tenshi" is gossamer-light and as sweet as honey. Cynics should avoid it; romantics may enjoy its simple charm.
