■ 줄거리
억울한 누명을 쓴 남자? 사이코패스 살인마?
범죄기록의 조작, 누구를 위한 비밀인가?
새벽 귀가 길, 영화현상소 과장인 한철민은 자신의 아파트 주변에 모인 사람들을 보고 불길한 예감을 한다. 출동한 경찰들이 자신의 집에서 자신을 체포하는 순간, 침대 시트에 가득한 피를 보고 자신의 아내가 사고를 당했음을 알게 된다. 경찰은 가장 유력한 용의자로 한철민을 체포하고 바로 구속, 형을 집행하려 한다. 한철민은 자신의 사건 변호를 국선 변호사가 아닌 자유분방한 성격의 변호사 강성희에게 의뢰한다. 강변호사는 이겨야 하는 재판에서는 반드시 이기고 마는 승부욕과 실력이 뛰어난 변호사.

Though The Client was pitched as a courtroom thriller, most of the action and excitement actually happen outside of the courtroom. The film revolves around a strange murder case in which the defendant (played by Jang Hyuk) has been accused of murdering his wife. The circumstantial evidence is strong and the river of blood left in the victim and defendant's apartment confirms foul play, but a body is yet to be found. Ha Jung Woo is the defense attorney who takes up his inscrutable client's cause, while Park Hee Soon is the driven prosecutor with his pride on the line.
The stage appears to be set for a legal showdown between the rival lawyers but the courtroom bouts are relatively brief and by the numbers. While the courtroom scenes are integral to the film and smoothly delivered, they're unlikely to surprise anyone who's watched a few episodes of Law & Order (for comparison, Silenced had far more compelling courtroom drama). The Client, however, does work well as a glossy crime mystery. The case setup is certainly intriguing enough: a murder without a corpse, an eerie suspect with the odds stacked against him, and an unconventional lawyer with reasonable doubt trying to get to the bottom of the mystery. In terms of direction and script, The Client may not excel but it is solid on all counts for a smart commercial thriller, with an appealing premise that gives the leading trio of actors ample room to perform. Jang Hyuk gets the job done as the inscrutable, unsettling murder suspect who sways the audience's doubts in both directions, though we never see the character's inner world. Park Hee Soon is charismatic as usual as the sharp, single-minded prosecutor who thankfully doesn't ever turn into a cliched bad guy nemesis. Of the trio, it's Ha Jung Woo that stands out the most, and his presence that really lifts the production up a notch. His role, though the largest of the three, is also the simplest on paper in terms of purpose and personality. Ha Jung Woo fleshes the character out with swagger and nuances that ground the story and its unbelievable twists to a believable and empathetic protagonist whose doubts and determination lead the audience's experience. I actually found his performance in The Client to be even more engaging than in The Yellow Sea, though the latter film is the more challenging one. The Client can be underwhelming if you're anticipating strong or original courtroom scenarios, which the film is short on. What the film does offer is an interesting murder mystery as its central conceit, and the right cast and tone to make the journey to the answer equally interesting. |
