Before collaborating in the sensational blockbuster Shiri, Gang Je Gyu (Taegukgi) and his leading man Han Suk Kyu (Forbidden Quest, Christmas In August) first worked together in the 1996 fantasy horror The Gingko Bed. Boasting an impressive cast which includes Shin Hyun Jun (His Last Gift), Shim Hye Jin (Acacia), Jin Hee Kyung (Holiday In Seoul), and Lee Bum Soo (My Wife Is A Gangster 3), this hair-raising tale of sorcery and mythical adventures teeters back and forth between a perfect mix of fantasy and horror. The big budget production tells the story of a General who loses his fiancée (Princess Mee Dan) to a court musician. Utterly enraged, the General kills his fiancée and her lover but the souls of the two lovers retreat to two nearby gingko trees. When the General finds out, he destroys one of the trees - that of the musician's, but by then, his fiancee's spirit had taken off to a gingko bed - and lives a thousand years to reunite with her lover once and for all.

College art lecturer Soo Hyun spots an old wooden bed made of gingko tree wood trashed outside his house. Marveled by its antiquity, he places the bed in his room, whereupon he is unwittingly sucked into the whirlwind of events from his past life. He discovers that he was once a palace musician who took away princess Mee Dan from the arms of General Hwang (Shin Hyun Jun). Now pursued by the enraged resurrected ghost of General Hwang who is on a rampage ripping people's hearts out to nourish his incarnated human body, Soo Hyun suddenly finds himself reunited with his fatal love whose spirit has been locked up inside the gingko bed for the past thousand years.
