YesAsia Editorial Description
Some of Korea's biggest stars came together in 2009 for the Korea-Japan Telecinema7 project, a series of seven feature-length mini-dramas released to great anticipation in both countries. Featuring a dream team of talent both behind and in front of the camera, the seven movies paired up top Korean drama directors with Japanese drama screenwriters for unique collaboration opportunities. Directed by Lee Jang Soo (Stairway to Heaven) and written by Oishi Shizuka (First Love), the romantic comedy The Relation of Face, Mind and Love starring Kang Ji Hwan (My Girlfriend is a Secret Agent) and Lee Ji Ah (Beethoven Virus) revolves around a shallow architect who gets beautiful and ugly women mixed up after a sight-impairing injury!

Ji-ah’s Electric!! A Wonderful Film!! (part a)
|
This movie gets your attention straight away, by an easy to slip into plot and captivating characters and when I first feasted eyes on loveable So-jung (Ji-ah Lee) I knew I was gonna enjoy this. So-jung is an incredible site to behold, as she walks breezily into a drinking bar, her coat flying open and her long legs showing, guys bumping into each other spilling their beers as she passes, only for her to sit down with her two friends and look, eh?..facely different. So-jung, you see, is the ‘ugly duckling’ of the piece (and I’ll use that phrase as irony as Ji-ah is verrry pretty and her character is wonderful!) meeting her handsome prince charming Tae-pung (Ji-hwan Kang) a famous architect, which then builds up into an explosively funny chemistry combination. More like a TV drama episode with a Japanese rom-com anime feel (also written by Oishi Shizuka), the story begins with architect Tae-pung, who swerving his car to miss a little dog in the road (after trying to grab a photo of his dead girlfriend blowing out of the window), crashes into a barrier and suffers minor vision impairment. At a hospital casualty unit, a doctor tells Tae-pung that his vision could temporarily make him see ‘ugly’ women as pretty and vise-versa, but eventually his vision will return to normal. So when madcap delight So-jung falls drunk outside Tae-pung’s posh apartment, he sees her as a beautiful ‘goddess’ instead of how she really looks. Both fall in love with each other, and even fall all over the place in the bedroom! (In fact some of the bedroom scenes are like something out of a Carry On movie). But when Tae-pung’s vision is corrected and he goes to a restaurant to meet up with So-jung he cannot ‘see’ her and then refuses to believe she’s the same woman when So-jung approaches him. This breaks So-jung’s heart (cue trembly bottom lip and teary eyes) and vows to get even with Tae-pung (“that playboy”!) at his workplace for dumping her. So-jung is even comforted by an orang-utan in a duffle coat on a bench (a sight to behold and on the trailer), as So-jung works with animals as an animal photographer as well as her collection of stray cats at her mom’s house. Later on Tae-pung begins to have lovely memories of sharing with So-jung, and begins to feel that his attitude to So-jung was wrong. So he decides to make amends and asks So-jung for her forgiveness. Which she does, after smacking him about a bit at her own work place. |

Ji-ah’s Electric!! A Wonderful Film!! (part b)
|
The main reason to see this is for Ji-ah Lee’s brilliant character So-jung! W-OoO-w!! Funny, mad, scary, energetic, cute, sexy and wonderful are understatements, and if you’ve wanted for another charismatic Ji-hyun Jeon or Na-young Lee et al, with added kookiness - this girl rocks! She’s as wild as a frantic mare, but endearing, loveable, human, with little inhibitions and you’ll love So-jung to bits I kid you not! As soon as So-jung enters the screen you’re transfixed! Actor Ji-hwan as Tae-pung is also equally the right man for the love interest, and the two main actors are just perfect together! No doubt a movie displaying the true meaning of why you love someone with the physical aspect only a partial, and as with So-jung’s incredibly additive personality you cannot fail to fall in love with her yourself. Its a re-tread of the common morale that it doesn’t really matter how a person looks, but inner love and personality that really counts (which is the easiest to change) and physical beauty, although good, can only ever be the icing on the cake. Now Ji-ah is a good-looking actress (and Tae-pung’s dead girlfriend’s photo is also Ji-ah ironically), but as So-jung she shines beyond her physical ‘limits’. I also felt that Ji-ah looked a bit like the late Eun Joo Lee, but with a quite goofy Na-young Lee character type mix. (I still feel sad for Eun Joo). Although the charisma and chemistry acting is fantastic, lost plot opportunities could have made this film a super smash hit! Unfortunately, its arrow falls short and it becomes a minor hit. But if you want a film to talk about....don’t miss this! At least try the trailer on the net! ^^ Is So-jung ugly? No friggin way! Bloody funny though! LOL! |
