The Road To Sampo (DVD) (Korea Version)

YesAsia Editorial Description

Based on Hwang Seok Young's novel, the Korean classic The Road to Sampo is the last of the 50 films master director Lee Man Hee produced from 1961 to 1975. Lauded as one of Korea's greatest filmmakers, yet virtually unknown both at home and abroad, Lee directed a wide range of features in his 14-year career but he is perhaps best known for war films and noir thrillers. His most famous works include the psychological horror The Devil's Stairway (1964), the erotically charged romance Water Mill (1966), and Manchu (1966), which is being remade in 2010 by Kim Tae Yong with Hyun Bin and Tang Wei in the starring roles.

Released posthumously in 1975, The Road to Sampo is a road film about three very different people who become companions by chance on the road. Construction worker Young Dal (Beck Il Sub) befriends middle-aged former convict Jeong (Kim Jin Kyu) who is heading back to his hometown of Sampo after ten years away. At a restaurant, they meet a runaway bar hostess (Moon Suk) who joins them in their journey to the train station. Along the way, they banter, argue, and talk about their pasts.

Classic Korean 'road' film Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
In "The Road to Sampo", an irresponsible construction worker fleeing a jealous husband, a convict just released from prison, and a bargirl unite for a long, cold trek on foot across Korea in the dead of winter. Each of the unlikely trio has their own agenda. The laborer is always on the make, the bargirl is escaping an abusive bar owner, while the ex-con just wants to see his hometown. As the group shares the joys, miseries, and frustrations of their arduous journey, we watch their distinctive personalities emerge, as the challenges they face matures them and knits them into an ad hoc family.

Often lensed from a worm's eye view, the film seems shot in an intentionally crude manner to match the rough-hewn characters it depicts and their rugged surroundings. The film's use of sound is creative, sometimes eliminating sound altogether to heighten the impact of scenes. It is a testimony to director Lee Man Hee's genius that the viewer comes to care so much about this band of misfits. While attributed to entirely different sources, it is interesting to note the striking similarities between "The Road to Sampo" and Yamada Yoji's "The Yellow Handkerchief", which appeared two years after "Sampo". Both films are very highly recommended.
