Korean-American writer-director Kim So Yong follows her award-winning debut In Between Days with
the equally poignant indie drama Treeless Mountain. While In Between Days delves into the coming-of-age experiences of a Korean-American teenager, Treeless Mountain goes further back to the dreams and despairs of childhood. Told through the eyes of its young protagonists, the film both enchants and devastates with the earnest story of two girls trying their hardest to get their mother back in their own way - but the world is not as innocent as their hearts.
Seven-year-old Jin (Kim Hee Yeon) and four-year-old Bin (Kim Sung Hee) have been left in the care of their alcoholic aunt (Kim Mi Hyang) while their mother (Lee Soo Ah) is off looking for their absent father. Their mother promised to return once their piggy bank is full, so Jin and Bin work diligently to fill the bank by selling grasshoppers and exchanging 100 won coins to 10 won coins. As the coin collection slowly grows, so too do their hopes of seeing their mother again. But will she really come back when the bank is full?

줄거리
돼지가 꽉 차면 엄마가 돌아온대요.
진과 빈, 두 자매의 사랑스럽고 애틋한 성장 이야기!
엄마와 살고 있는 사랑스러운 두 자매 진과 빈. 어려워진 형편 때문에 홀로 두 아이를 키우기가 힘들어진 엄마는 진과 빈을 지방에 사는 고모에게 맡기고 아빠를 찾으러 간다. 하지만 고모는 신세한탄을 하며 술만 마실 뿐, 두 자매에게 무관심하기만 하다. 엄마가 떠나던 날, 진과 빈은 돼지 저금통이 꽉 차면 돌아온다는 엄마의 약속에 메뚜기를 구워 팔고 큰 동전을 작은 동전으로 바꿔가며 조금씩 저금통을 채워나간다. 저금통이 꽉 차던 날 약속과 달리 엄마는 돌아오지 않고 얼마 뒤 두 자매는 다시 시골 할머니에게 맡겨지게 되는데... 모두에게 짐만 되는 진과 빈, 이작은 소녀들이 머물 곳은 어디에 있는 것일까?
