Korean-American writer-director Kim So Yong follows her award-winning debut In Between Days with the equally poignant indie drama Treeless Mountain. While In Between Days delves into the coming-of-age experiences of a Korean-American teenager, Treeless Mountain goes further back to the dreams and despairs of childhood. Told through the eyes of its young protagonists, the film both enchants and devastates with the earnest story of two girls trying their hardest to get their mother back in their own way - but the world is not as innocent as their hearts.

Seven-year-old Jin (Kim Hee Yeon) and four-year-old Bin (Kim Sung Hee) have been left in the care of their alcoholic aunt (Kim Mi Hyang) while their mother (Lee Soo Ah) is off looking for their absent father. Their mother promised to return once their piggy bank is full, so Jin and Bin work diligently to fill the bank by selling grasshoppers and exchanging 100 won coins to 10 won coins. As the coin collection slowly grows, so too do their hopes of seeing their mother again. But will she really come back when the bank is full?

What is the nature of childhood resilience? Sisters Jin and Bin, ages 6 and 3, live with their mother. Jin likes school and does well. One day, their mother leaves the girls with their father's sister, a woman they do not know. The mother seeks a reconciliation with their father. She leaves them a plastic piggy bank, promising to return when the bank is full. The girls scrub and clean for their aunt, a tippler who's often cranky and complaining. She gives them a few coins for their work. They earn more money catching, grilling, and selling grasshoppers. They miss their mother. The bank fills. They watch for her from a mound of dirt. Will she return? Will stoic faces give way to a smile?
