　　大媽由於不能生育，被年輕的大伯冷落在鄉下的橘園。當大媽知道自己的丈夫在城裡同一個交際花嫣紅打得火熱時，大媽決定為自己的命運作點什麼……

　　於是秀禾出現了，這個佃農的女兒由於同大媽的青年時代長得出奇地相像；被大媽一眼相中。她決定把秀禾娶進容家，如果她還能為容家生個孩子，那麼她將大伯永遠留在自己身邊就再也不是夢想了……

　　堂弟耀輝替代大伯充當了婚禮的新郎！然而就在掀開蓋頭的一殺那，耀輝愛上了秀禾……從此，一切事情都遵循著一條足以令大媽絕望的途徑發展著。

　　每一個人都在痛苦的兩難中抉擇。秀禾愛大媽，卻不願陷入大媽為自己安排的沒有愛情生活！耀輝愛秀禾，卻沒有勇氣顛覆形同父親的大哥新獲得的愛情，更沒有勇氣同善解人意的、一直愛著自己的未婚妻嫻雅分手！這一系列的人物命運將戲劇推向最終的高潮。嫻雅雙目失明；秀禾懷孕了，卻不幸流產；而嫣紅肚中的“容氏後代”卻有著令人心惊的秘密……

　　Adapted from the same novel by a Taiwan author Qi Jun, this play tells a story about the sad and uncontrollable life of two women, Mrs. Rong and her tenant farmer called Xiu He, who lived in a small town in south china at the end of Wing Dynasty. Because she cannot give birth to a baby, Mrs. Rong is abandoned at their countryside home by her husband while he lives in the town. When she learns that her husband has love affairs with a party girl, she determines to take measures to change her fate. So she decides to make Xiu He, a daughter of her tenant farmer, as her husband’s concubine with the hope that she can give birth to a baby for the Rong family. In that case her husband may return home and live with her. She asks Yao Fei, her cousin, pretends to be her husband to get married with Xiu He. Unfortunately, Yao Fei falls in love with Xiu He at the first sight and later everything goes against Mrs. Rong’s expectation. Although Yao Fei loves Xiu he deeply, he is not brave enough to ask her cousin Mr. Rong to let him have Xiu He. On the other hand, he is not willing to give up his considerate who also loves him very much. Conflicting love, uncontrollable fate and strange experiences make the climax of the play. When Xiu He gets pregnant, Mrs. Rong realizes that she has made a ridiculous mistake which almost ruins Xiu He’s happiness. She makes a bitter decision to let Xiu He choose her own love rather than a victim of the inhuman feudalism.
