1945年8月，日本投降，台灣重新變成中國的領土，林袔祿一家人開始面對一個新的命運。
林阿祿有四個孩子，當家的大兒子文雄有兩個老婆，經營一家叫"小上海酒家"，二兒子文森是個軍醫，戰死在中南半島，三兒子曾被拘禁在中國大陸的"日軍戰佚營"，返台後有點精神失常，他最小的兒子文清由於十歲時頭部受傷又聾又啞，在外地開了一家小照相館。
大哥文雄發現文良在走私毒品，立刻命令文良退出這個集團，最後文良雖然出獄但已成為一個廢人，不幸的是大哥文雄又再這個時候被本地流氓所殺，林家四兄弟一時間只乘下文清足以當家，文清不得不在大哥出殯之日與年輕護士寬美草草結婚。
林阿祿受到一連串打擊，似乎更加老邁，常抱怨四個兒子唯一能他依賴的，竟只有這個殘廢的文清 ......
