From celebrated Mainland director Zhang Yimou (Raise the Red Lantern) comes Happy Times, a surprising comedy with a twist of allegorical social commentary. Chinese comedian Zhao Ben Shan stars as Zhao, a fifty-something unemployed loser who targets an overweight divorcee as his last shot at love. He courts her by saying he is the well-to-do manager of the "Happy Times Hotel" - which happens to be an out-and-out lie. Unfazed, she gives Zhao her blind stepdaughter Wu Ying (Dong Jie, in a marvelous, revelatory performance), so that she can find a job at the hotel. Faced with his lie, Zhao decides to continue the deception, and even fabricates a hotel and a masseur job for Wu Ying - which is all possible because she can't see! The deception can't last forever, but in looking for a wife, Zhao may have inadvertently found a daughter. Zhang Yimou departs from his usual period dramas for Happy Times, a bittersweet and humorously touching film about how a man can find an unexpected love in a most unexpected way.

A bittersweet comedy about a man who goes looking for a wife and fins a daughter

　　Zhao (Zhao Benshan) is a economically challenged, aging bachelor who hasn't had much luck in love and so he enlists the help of a matchmaker to find a wife. Thinking he has finally met the woman of his dreams, he leads her to believe he is wealthy and agrees to a wedding far beyond his means.

　　Desperate for funds, he turns to his friends and together they hatch the scheme to raise the money by refurbishing an abandoned bus they will rent out by the hour - the "Happy Times Hotel" - to young couples starved for privacy. But this plan goes awry when the bus is hauled away to the dump. Believing he is a wealthy hotelier, his fiancee persuades Zhao to hire her blind stepdaughter Wu Ying (Dong Jie), as a masseuse at his hotel. Creating a tangled and hilarious mess of lies in order to employ her, Zhao must create a fake hotel environment in an abandoned factory, so she believes he has a legitimate job.

　　Finally, he is forced to come clean, which turns out to be both a heartbreaking and hilarious life lesson for all involved.
