Excellent film from the silent era Customer Review Rated Bad 7 - 7 out of 10
This film is one of the most famous films starring Ruan Lingyu (who has recently had a biographical film made about her called Centre Stage). It was made in 1934, directed by Wu Yonggang, and is a silent film.

In this film, she plays a young mother working the streets of Shanghai as a hooker to make ends meet (aparently after her husband has been killed). She hopes to give her son a better life and begins to earn enough to put her son through school, though the prejudices of other school parents, and the gambling addiction of a man, Zhang, who has decided to sponge off her, make this dream hard to realise.

There are English subtitles, though they are sometimes a little hard to read. Chinese intertitles are, however, clear. There is no music. As with many films of this age, the original seems to have been poorly stored. At 65 minutes, it might also be shorter than some other prints.

However, technical issues aside, it is a most worthwhile film, showcasing the acting skills of Ruan Lingyu as well as a slice of pre-revolutionary Chinese life. Highly recommended.
