YesAsia Editorial Description

An official selection at the 27th Hong Kong International Film Festival, Night Corridor is a portentous horror-thriller that explores the depths of human repression, and the creeping fear of the beast within. Daniel Wu earned a Golden Horse Nomination for Best Actor for his daring performance as Sam Yuen, an art photographer who confronts his past when his twin brother is brutally eviscerated by wild monkeys. His journey leads him back to Hong Kong, where he runs into sexual abuse, repressed homosexuality, a possible Oedipal Complex, and a meeting with a gentleman who just might be the Devil! Gorgeous model CoCo Chiang Yi co-stars as a nymphomaniac whose desire for Sam Yuen hides darker motives, and longtime Hong Kong actors Kara Wai Ying Hung, Eddy Ko, and Goo Fung lend their veteran presence. Directed and written by Julian Lee (The Accident), Night Corridor is a thoughtful, stylish journey into the madness and terrifying darkness of the human soul.

An artist investigates the uncanny death of his twin brother who was gnawed and clawed to pieces by wild monkeys. he ends up grappling with the beast within, after being gobbled alive by a ravenous nympho and getting sucked into in a series of grisly murders. Out of his closet tumble skeletons of repressed homosexuality, pedophilic abuse, Oedipal complex and primal cruelty. But eerier stuff awaits him in a colonial library guarded by a night porter who may be the Devil Incarnate. A danse macabre choreographed with European flair and painterly texture, transposed from the Satanic world of Polanski and Goya to a post-97 Hong Kong of paranoia, animal appetite, and - monkey business.

Professional Review of "Night Corridor (Hong Kong Version)"

September 23, 2003

Night Corridor Unlike the US or Europe, the definition of independent film in Hong Kong is quite narrow. Not only does it mean a lack of entertainment value, the absence of professional actors also keeps the general audience away. That may explain why independent movies are never a popular form of cinema in Hong Kong. However, filmmaker/writer Julian Lee tried to prove that we are wrong by making an independent film that is entertaining and also features glamorous stars, and that is Night Corridor.

Adapted from Julian Lee's novel, the story focuses on Sam's (Daniel Wu) investigation of his brother's death. He doesn't know that the more he is involved, the more he is stepping into an evil trap of no return. A variety of elements are placed into the script, from suspense to horror, and from homosexual implication to a post-colonial perspective, Lee's story never runs out of interesting ideas and is without doubt more complicated and introspective than most of the mainstream movies coming out recently. While the execution of the director is not flawless, and the structure of the story is also said to be quite confusing, it nevertheless displays the unusual ambition of the director, and how he was trying to do something different.

Since I was still baffled after the first viewing and couldn't formulate a rational interpretation to decipher the content satisfactorily yet, a great part of this brief review would be focused on the technical aspects (a more detailed review on the story will be coming soon). Being labelled an independent film didn't seem to deteriorate the quality of the production at all. Julian Lee's insistence on using 35mm instead of digital video format was definitely a wise decision. With a peculiar and exotic visual setting that relies heavily on the use of cold and dark colors, 35mm film, that is much more delicate and reacts to lights way more sensitive than digital video, seems to be an inevitable choice. Talking about the cinematography, the filmmaker is probably influenced by European art a lot. Apart from the display of the Western paintings, most of the scenes are constructed in a way that keeps you wonder: Is this the same place we are living in?" The stylistic use of lighting and shadow also seems to be a tribute to some Western silent films.

Daniel Wu is one of the few young actors in Hong Kong who is really talented and pays respect to his profession as an actor. What he has accomplished so far makes you believe that he actually loves what he is doing, which is different from a great number of new actors in Hong Kong who merely treat movie/or are forced by their management companies to treat movie as a kind of job or merchandise to promote themselves as an idol. Wu's decision of taking up the producer role further affirms his passion for films to us. As the actor as well as the producer, Wu's depiction is refreshing. His character Sam (the Chinese name seems to carry double meaning as the pronounciation of Yuen Sam could also mean "the Heart of the Ape" -> "Purified Heart") is not an easy role to handle, but Wu's portrayal proves that he has really spent time to study the mind and the emotion of the character. Wu's breakthrough performance absolutely deserves more recognition. Veteran actors Wei Ying-hung, Eddy Ko and Gu feng are never disappointing as usual.

While Night Corridor is not a flawless work both in terms of the aesthetic and narrative structures, it is still highly recommended. It is because we are tired of nonsensical comedies! We are tired of pop singer-turned actors! I really hope this film will act as a catalyst to trigger a new wave of independent cinema for us!

It does take a certain audience... Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Okay so the majority of reviews are not in favor of this movie. Three of my friends watched it with me and only one of them like it. The other two were very confused and wanted to shoot my DVD, but I got the majority of it. It does take a few viewings to figure everything out, but the style and direction of the movie was quite good. Daniel sometimes not that believeable in character did quite a good job when he needed to. I also find that people with little art experience whether in actual art or theatre, have a fear of homosexuality, and are conservative by nature did not appreciated this film. It moves you into another level that most people are not willing to cross. I guess you also have to accept that you are a little maniacal as well if you understand the storyline. I don't think "normal" people would. If you look at this from a phsycological point-of-view you can look at it as a case study, being the world you thought you knew is not ANYTHING that you thought, and trying to figure out who you really are. Simply put, open your mind and you will have to watch it more than ONCE to figure it out.

Thumb up for them!!! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I never doubt y Daniel Wu was nominated in best actor catagory. After I watch this film. I think first feeling that most of audiences said after watched it is what they tried to say to us or may b So confused. For me,I got a headache and cried becuz of the stress from the film.I was so exciting when I got this film.I really like the atmosphere of the film.I think the director chose the wise method to express the feeling and used the old way of dark picture to tell the way of the film. But I think this film is not for everyone,it's a weak point of it.The suitable audiences of this film should b some kinda indy's film audience or someone who is interest in art.Cuz this film is hard to understand cuz of the storyline. The story of this film is kinda complicated and u can't figure it out so easy.Even I still hav to think about theme of the film. But Daniel is walk through the wall of acting.I admire him alot. Becuz he luv to try sth new.He tried to act in every role that he can do and I think it's the thing that actor should do.And I still wanna watch more works of this director. If he got new film,I'm not hesitated to buy it.

Henry Fuseli's nightmare Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
The old man & the stepdad represent the monkey. Daniel Wu is the horse. Daniel's mom and his brother's girlfriend represent the lady. Homosexuality, oedipal complex, pedophilic abuse, and cannibalism are the elements in creating Fuseli's (Wu's) nightmare. The movie like the painting is not visionary but literary in conception. Welcome to Fuseli's (Henry Fuseli= Daniel Wu = Julien Lee) nightmare...The End!
