思想﹐使他萌發維新變法之念。因工務處承受太後旨意動用海軍經典費建造頤和園的奏折﹐太後震怒。甲午
戰敗後﹐翁向光緒推薦康有為﹐輔助推行新政。太後徑調榮祿任直總督﹐並密謀挾持皇上去天津閱兵﹐企圖
廢帝﹐將維新派一網打盡。光緒接連下兩道密旨﹐令康等應變。又密召袁世凱﹐派他去刺殺榮祿。然後未執
太後。而袁向榮告密﹐太後重又垂簾聽政。光緒被禁於瀛臺﹐珍妃也被打入北三所壽藥屋。而八國聯軍入侵
﹐逼近天津。某晚﹐光緒去探視珍妃。珍妃勸她保重身體﹐來自再展鴻圖。侵略軍兵臨京城﹐太後挾持光緒
一起出逃﹐並且逼迫珍妃自殺。
