YesAsia Editorial Description

Director Ang Lee (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) first achieved international attention with The Wedding Banquet, a funny and unexpected human comedy that was a hit with audiences worldwide. Winston Chao stars as Wai Tung, a gay Taiwanese gentleman living in New York City. Wai Tung's happy life with his lover Simon (Michael Lichtenstein) is interrupted by the meddling of his conservative parents (Long Hun and Kuei Ya Lei), who have no idea their son is gay and wishes to see him married to an eligible bride. To placate them, Wai Tung enters into a sham marriage with struggling artist Wei Wei (May Chin), while Simon pretends to be the best man. The deception is a success, but his parents' visit from Taiwan - and the subsequent wedding banquet - leads to surprising and hilarious results! A wonderfully human comedy-drama about cultural differences, expectations, and even a few stereotype-breaking revelations, The Wedding Banquet is an independent filmmaking classic that perfectly demonstrates director Ang Lee's ample talent.

Product Information

Director: Li An

A pair of Chinese-Caucasian Gay couple, two Taiwan traditional parents and a girl who is willing to have a deceiving marriage for a green card have joined together and become a story full of love and sensibility. Director Ang Lee has entwined all the controversial issues of that time in a realistic and spontaneous way, which has probed into the issues like clashes between a grow-in-the-west son and his conservative Chinese parents, the differences between the eastern and western cultures and the Chinese's desire to look for freedom at all cost. Starting with all the dilemmas and ending with their unspoken compromise., the love and understanding among the family has been impenetrated throughout the movie, which has shown the excellent filming technique of Director Amg Lee.

Please note: There are two different dual DVD covers from The Wedding Banquet You will get either one of the two designs when you order your copy.

Best Gay Movie so far.... Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
I have seen quite many Asian gay movies. But no one of those movies can be compared with this one! This movie is really great. At one scene, it will make you laugh. And at other scene, it will make you cry. Ang Lee is really expert in doing how to turn a common plot into an interesting movie. And the acting of the main stars is just so great, especially May Chin & Gui Ah Lei. Only Winston Chao (a newcomer at that time)that needs to be polished a little bit.
