The Fist (DVD) (End) (ATV Drama) (US Version)

YesAsia Editorial Description

A fictional hero that attained iconic status through Bruce Lee's Fist of Fury, Chen Zhen was memorably portrayed on television by Donnie Yen in a popular 1995 ATV drama. But that actually wasn't the first time ATV had placed Chen Zhen's life on screen. Released in 1982 during the station's RTV years, The Fist came as a follow-up to to the previous year's highly successful Legendary Fok about Fok Yuen Gap (Huo Yuan Jia). With the blessings of producer Tsiu Siu Ming, Leung Siu Lung (recently seen in Kung Fu Hustle) reprised his role as Chen Zhen, picking up a new storyline after Legendary Fok. With its big budget and extensive promotion, The Fist was an ambitious effort for RTV at the time, and paid off with viewership ratings approaching 50%, handily beating its TVB contender. This classic RTV dramas co-stars Candice Yu, Lau Wai Man, Choi King Fai, and Bill Tung.

After avenging his master Fok Yuen Gap's death, Chen Zhen (Leung Siu Lung) becomes a wanted criminal. With the assistance of the Shanghai mayor, he manages to escape by faking his own death, and moves to Beijing with Fok's son Dung Kok where they live quietly away from the world's eyes. Chen's identity is eventually revealed however when he comes into conflict with Japanese official Sato, putting his life into danger but also igniting his nationalist fervor. While Sato plans his revenge, Chen resolves to reopen Fok's school and spread the teachings and martial arts of his master.

chen jun Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
this is one of his best work because its nice and clear quality video movie. his martial arts moves are clean, strong and fast and also perfect each time. also he is one of the greatest martial artist. this chen jun dvd collection is definitely one of his all time best! very good viewing for martial arts after drama scenes. i still think leung xiao lung should specialize more just on martial arts action video movies, instead of drama acting.

My favorite Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Liang Siu-long's martial arts achievements and his actings are the major factors which made this mini-TV series a "must-see" for all action movies fans. It would be great if it is on DVD so that his fans in the United States and Japan can understand it even better. Although I have watched it for several times on VCD, I will definitely want keep another DVD copy as my personal collection.

A Great Classic from Golden 80's Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This is one of the best ATV series from the 80s along with Legendary Fok. I watched this film as a kid more than 20 years ago and now I'm watching it again. It was good then and it is still very good now. The fight scenes were incredibly well choreographed.

This is the story of Chen Zhen, the best student of Lengendary Fok. Though this film arouses nationalistic pride, I like that not all Chinese are good and not all Japanese are bad. The tragic love story between the Japanese Samauria and a Chinese girl was very touching.

I gave this a 5 star rating because the film is good. But this product does not deserve a 5 star, mainly because it did not allow viewers to chose between Cantonese or Mandarin as they did in Legendary Fok and it is not on DVD.

This is definitely asking for too much, but I also wish that classics such as this would come with English subtitles. I have non-Chinese speaking friends who love to watch these martial art series. They watch it and later call me for explainations. It's quite funny that they still watch it even though they don't speak Chinese. This goes to show that there are consumers out there not tapped into because of the lack of English subtitles or dubbing.
