The first film from director Riley Yip (Just One Look), Love is not a game, but a joke is a breezy, bittersweet urban romance that evokes the work of celebrated director Wong Kar Wai. Jan Lam, Andy Hui and Wallace Chung play three friends who make a pact to compete for the hand of a girl named Karen - but first, they have to find her. There are certain rules: the time period for the contest is only one month, and they can't use the television, newspaper, or radio to locate her. All they can do is hope that their intuition - or perhaps just their luck - will allow them to chance upon her somewhere in Hong Kong. The three approach their goal in different ways, but each finds other surprising romantic encounters, and perhaps opportunities for lasting love. But will each settle for what's in front of them, or will they still seek that idealized, perfect love? At once existential and deliriously romantic, Love is not a game, but a joke benefits from superb cinematography, a delightfully eclectic soundtrack, and the presence of Shu Qi, who was nominated for Best Actress at the Hong Kong Film Awards for her heartbreaking turn as a lonely policewoman. Co-starring Theresa Lee and Christine Ng, and produced by Stanley Kwan.

Eddie, Paul and Leslie study overseas in Canada and they all fall in love with their classmate Carol who is back to Hong Kong. They think of a game to compete for the love of Carol: the first one who can find Carol can be her boyfriend. Eddie believes in fate, he follows the instruction of a fortune-teller and takes the buses frequently. Paul asks his friend, a policewoman, to find Carol. Leslie makes use of the telephone…
