YesAsia Editorial Description

Superstar Andy Lau takes on not one, but two roles in Gameboy Kids, a raucous nonsense comedy from director Gordon Chan (Thunderbolt). Andy Lau is Wah, a childlike genius who accidentally switches places with Wong Kau Tai (also Andy Lau), a cranky midget (!) and heir to a vast triad empire. Wah is installed as new head of the organization, but has to contend with his cross-dressing uncle (regular Stephen Chow co-star Richard Ng Man Tat), and a too-cool bodyguard (Aaron Kwok) who doesn't seem to mind all the silliness going on around him. There are enemies too, including Master Dragon (The Matrix action director Yuen Woo Ping) and a sexy femme fatale (Rosamund Kwan) who starts to fall for the lovable Wah. Gunfights, car chases, bizarre action sequences, inflatable killer whales, and Rosamund Kwan being shot out of a giant slingshot are only some of the incredibly odd and bizarre things that make Gameboy Kids unfathomably funny and simply impossible to describe. And you simply won't find another movie with Andy Lau as an angry midget!

Professional Review of "Gameboy Kids"

May 5, 2004

Most HKSAR comedies are situation comedies: stock characters mismatched with stock situations, the bizarre mixture propelling the movie forward like a turtle on skates with a bottle rocket strapped to its back. What's lost? Subtlety, character-based humor and sly jokes. What's gained? Maximum bizarro movies that make goo leak out of your ears.

Gameboy Kids? It's a triad movie on the outside. Boss Uncle Seven is battling his greatest enemy (cancer) and he's not winning. He loses and Ng Man-tat and daughter, Sandra Ng, have to help his chosen successor win out over triad traitor, Hou Tin, and perma-wigged hit woman, Rosamund Kwan, who wants to cause chaos in Hong Kong so they can cheat more grannies. That's the situation, so try these characters: Aaron Kwok = Tom Cruise. Andy Lau = Dustin Hoffman. Yes, it's Rain Man, Hong Kong style.

Set in the middle of a triad gang war the movie takes turns trying to out-freak itself with any possible tedium relieved by the dance sequences, motorcycle chases, and fight scenes that pop up every ten minutes with the regularity of weasels. Scenes start and end with astonishing abruptness and there are several instances where Andy and company simply forget their lines while the merciless camera grinds on.

The senseless factor increases with the performances: Aaron Kwok comes on like a Cantopop Terminator, constantly chasing after Andy amuck. And Andy? Well, he plays twins. One is the retarded, card-counting twin who accidentally takes over the triad. The other is a vicious midget who lives in an Italian Abbey and who hates having his head touched. Say what? Yes what. Andy plays a knee-biting, shin-kicking midget in this movie. Can it get any weirder?

Yes, actually. It can. And it does. Ng Man-tat spends part of the movie channeling Chow Yun-fat in A Better Tomorrow. Andy Lau breakdances. Rosamund Kwan is launched from a giant slingshot. There's a wedding. They're in India. There's a motorcycle chase. Andy's an undercover cop...I'm so confused I must be watching a Hong Kong movie.

This is the movie director Gordon Chan would probably like removed from his resume, but it's one of the strangest, undiscovered nonsense films ever made in Hong Kong. As Andy says, "With this I won't scare George Michael." BE scared of George Michael? Will not frighten George Michael? Why George Michael? I don't know, but me too.

A TALE OF MISTAKEN IDENTITY Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
When he becomes a triad godfather tt's difficult to tell if Andy Lau's character is half witted or just a big kid in this tale of mistaken identity. He wants to play ("play" being the key word here) all the time but on the positive side he does try to persuade his triad brothers to be good.

very funny to watch Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
A very funny movie. I like it from start to end. It's a much more positive movie than a few negative complaints, ignore the complaint and you have a very enjoying movie to watch.

Coolness Customer Review Rated Bad 7 - 7 out of 10
I watched this movie again after a long time and realised that too many people write off some of the old films. This film was really cool and fun. The plot is typical of a old hong kong fun film and the acting is so so but it is really enjoyable. Aaron is really gorgeous and Andy well he is himself in this. The only objection is that they dubbed over Aaron's voice (although they did do it well).

Kid's movie Customer Review Rated Bad 2 - 2 out of 10
This movie is funny if you're less than ten years old and have never seen what a funny movie is suppose to be. The acting is ok. but the plot is weak from beginning to end. Andy in a non-action movie does not work. The only good thing about the movie is Rosamund, she looked gooood!
