The Golden Girls DVD Region All
YesAsia Editorial Description
Joe Ma Wai Ho (Feel 100%) directs The Golden Girls with wit and heart, and manages to insert many fun asides about the golden years of Hong Kong Cinema. Anita Yuen and Sean Lau Ching Wan demonstrate their established chemistry, and Francis Ng turns in a hilarious supporting role as a vain star of heroic bloodshed films. Co-starring a number of Hong Kong writer/directors (including Young and Dangerous producer Manfred Wong, and Ah Ying director Allen Fong), The Golden Girls is a Hong Kong Cinema treat, mixing charismatic stars, winning comedy, and a touching romance into one deliciously entertaining confection.

Professional Review of "The Golden Girls"
|
The late 60s were the high-water mark of Hong Kong cinema as annual audience attendance reached the 100 million mark and the little colony that could outstripped Hollywood production between 1965 and 1967. These were also the last years of indigenous Cantonese-language production. By 1970, Mandarin (the language of Taiwan) had become the official language of Hong Kong movies - a trend that would last until the late 80s. But these hothouse years are a magic Nevernever land of the Hong Kong film industry when Shaw Brothers ruled the earth with their reusable sets and dormitories crammed full of actors. And this is the backdrop for the bitter comedy of The Golden Girls. A perfect example of High School's Crown Prince, Joe Ma's, movie-making chops, this is the ultraluxe story of three actresses May (Pauline Suen), Lulu (Ada Choi), and Mei-Ball (Anita Yuen) and the scriptwriter (Lau Ching-wan) who falls in love with one or two of them. Mei-Ball is an on-set klutz, a wannabe method clown who keeps asking what her motivation is despite the fact that she's just another girl in the chorus. Lulu and May are better looking, but less talented, and the three treat the Shaw Brothers lot like an endless summer camp: getting into scrapes, dancing with boys, and avoiding the wrath of dragon lady, Sister Sen. Eventually, they find success, but love comes and goes, and the years try their commitment to each other (but never to moviemaking). There is a spot-on parody of the Canto films of the period one doesn't need to be a film historian to get the jokes, including Francis Ng's poisonous send-up of Jimmy Wang-Yu. Taking the time to luxuriate in its production design, The Golden Girls feels more like a TV miniseries than a fast n' scrappy Hong Kong romance, but despite the glitz, it's surprisingly frank about what it entails for a woman to get ahead in the only growth industry open to her in the 1960s. It's a comedy, but what the movies, and these actresses, are selling is sex. Near-rape, physical abuse and the relentlessly probing, porky fingers of a pack of lascivious directors are all treated as par for the course, since what goes unspoken is that it's either this or a job as an office tea lady. Although The Golden Girls may meander at times, it still winds up on the side of the forces of good, largely due to its message. Because what it's saying is that while we may marry the wrong people, say the wrong things, lose our friends and family, grow old and stiff, and forget all our ideals, we'll always have the movies. by Grady Hendrix |

Ada Choi is great in this film and takes away the spotlight from Lau Ching-wan and Anita Yuen. Great movie to watch..a stroll down the 60's and 70's... |

| This film takes you down memory lane into the world of HK studio film making in the 60s. The film is enjoyable and amusing and Lau Chin Wan and Anita Yuen are good. However, the one I liked best was Ada Choi who's "awful" acting in the audition scene was so bad it was great. Till today, I still burst out laughing every time I recall that scene and how good she was at being horrid. These kinds of scences could quite easily fall flat on their faces but Ada Choi played it perfectly. Maybe I liked her best too because I liked her character best, she may be ditzy in the beginning but in the end it's her character that'll be the decisive one. |

This is one of those movies that seem ordinary but turn out to be excellent. A Very sweet love story...Sean Lau and Anita Yuan just have that special chemistry like what they had in another classic love story "C'est La Vie, Mon Cheri"...A really nice combination. The story ties up pretty well too, definitely worth buy! Btw..for some reason Sean Lau looked irresistibly cute to me at the end of the movie..weird... |
