The world of streetwise Hong Kong reporters gets a refreshing exploration in the entertaining and compelling drama Headlines. Popular singer Emil Chau is Sorrow, a veteran reporter who has long since lost his scruples thanks to years of digging in the tabloid trenches. But he begins to reexamine his ethics when rookie reporter Peter (Daniel Wu) is brought on board. Peter still believes in professional ethics, and though Sorrow initially scoffs at such youthful idealism, his righteous passions get reignited when he digs up a scoop that may damage the reputation of an old friend (Wayne Lai Yiu Cheung). Meanwhile, fellow reporter Joey (Maggie Cheung Ho Yee) gets involved with a young triad while trying to write his story, and Peter investigates the story of a young woman (Grace Yip) who's trying to raise her two young brothers alone. Ultimately, the three reporters begin to question their responsibilities. Are reporters more responsible to the reader's need to know, or to the subjects whose lives they're exposing? A thoughtful drama full of welcome human themes, Headlines is a surprising and engaging Hong Kong film.
