YesAsia Editorial Description

Celebrated Mainland filmmaker Zhang Yimou brings his inimitable touch to Red Sorghum, a sumptuous drama set during 1930s China, just prior to the Japanese occupation. Jiu'er (Gong Li) is a young bride arranged to marry the leprous owner of a sorghum winery. But the leper dies, and Jiu'er takes over the winery, along with her lover (Jiang Wen), a burly rogue with a natural, rough charisma. Their rural lives are filled with struggle and even joy, but the invasion of the Japanese brings tragedy and blood to their doorsteps. Told in glorious shades of red, Red Sorghum is quintessential Zhang Yimou, and uses setting, cinematography, and stunning imagery to create characters and mood that are both iconic and recognizable. Gong Li and Jiang Wen both turn in revelatory performances. As both an anti-war film and a portrait of pre-Communist Chinese life, Red Sorghum is a compelling, powerful achievement from a true master of cinema.

Depressing, somewhat confusing Customer Review Rated Bad 5 - 5 out of 10
I've seen a number of Zhang Yimou's films, but this was my least favorite. The overall tone of the film is rather dark and depressing, made more so by the bleak setting for the story. It was more depressing than his "Raise the Red Lantern," also starring Gong Li.

Gong Li's fine acting is what makes this film worth seeing. However, the behavior of the characters at many points seemed nonsensical, e.g., when the storyteller's grandfather (Jiang Wen) lines up the barrels of wine to urinate into them, why did the dozen or so winery workers nearby do nothing to stop him, but just stand and watch?

The film has some disturbing violence, which potential viewers should be aware of.

Technically, the video and sound quality are very much below typical DVD standards. The English subtitles are marred by awkward grammar, incorrect words, and spelling errors, but they nevertheless serve their purpose.

This film was worth seeing, if only to experience Zhang Yimou's full repertoire, and for Gong Li's performance.

Superlative film A++++ Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Definitely one of the top 10 movies ever seen - Red Sorghum has become an utter classic defining the best of Zhang Yi Mou and also casting Gong Li's rapturous performance as the face of chinese art cinema.

Sadly the quality of the DVD is no better than the then available VCD version which itself is no easy task to find. It's a welcome release although more care in transfer would have helped.

A splendid re-release all the same - anyone who has never seen this should get it now.

Money well spent. Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Although the transfer isn't great(less lit scenes affected most), it is in beautiful anamorphic 2.35:1 widescreen. The english subtitle translation isn't as artfully done as the VHS version, but is certainly better than nothing. Just happy a version is available on DVD for a great price, as this is one of the greatest films ever made in my opinion. I can easily recommend this product.

Good movie, bad DVD quality Customer Review Rated Bad 2 - 2 out of 10
A beautiful film, and Gong Li's breakthrough, just too bad that it's yet another example of bad DVD-transfering - so my rating is not for the film as such but the DVD version of it.

A Great Movie Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I saw this movie many years ago here in the States.
I love this movie. It's a classic and one of
director Zhang's best work.
Gong Li and Jiang Wen were both excellent. This
is not a movie to be missed.
