In 1963, con artist Nishiguchi Akira murdered five people and committed multiple cases of fraud before being captured by the police. He was hung for his crimes in 1970, and author Saki Ryozo wrote an award-winning novel based on the crime spree years later, attracting several directors' interests to take the story for the big screen. In the end, director Imamura Shohei won out, and the subsequent film - Vengeance is Mine - ended up being one of his greatest films. It couldn't come at a better time for the Japanese New Wave director in 1979, who stayed away from fictional narrative filmmaking for several years after the commercial failure of The Profound Desire of the Gods. Led by a bravura performance by Ogata Ken, Vengeance is Mine earned both commercial and critical success in Japan, winning multiple awards at the Japan Academy Awards that year.
Named after a quote from the bible, Vengeance is Mine follows the 78-day murderous rampage of Enokizu Iwao (renamed from Nishiguchi). Starting from the moment of his capture, his crimes are revealed through multiple flashbacks, from his brutal murder of two men in the woods to the rest of his violent journey. During his escape from custody, he takes on multiple identities in multiple cities across Japan, befriending potential victims before defrauding them for money. Things get even messier when he gets involved with an innkeeper and her mother.

The unnerving objectivity with which Imamura tells the story, combined with the film's formal beauty and precision and its refusal to explain or condemn, produces a devastating effect. "Inside of this man. could there be nothing but hollowness? I think I can see the forlorn inner soul of today's man." (Imamura)

Shocking tale of serial killer

Imamura Shohei's "Vengeance is Mine" stands out for its cold-blooded, matter of fact depiction of a psychopathic serial killer. Ogata Ken delivers a frighteningly realistic performance as the calculating killer. Ogata gets deep inside his character to find both the charm that lures people into the killer's world and the inhuman cruelty by which he then exterminates them.
"Vengeance is Mine", however, is more than just a great performance by Ogata Ken. What really sets it apart is the depiction of the people (particularly the women) who are drawn into the killer's life like moths to a flame. By spending so much time on these other characters, the film is much more than just a story of a killer; it makes a statement about the desires and dreads that lie within all of our hearts. "Vengeance is Mine" is not easy viewing, but it is an important film. I recommend it very highly for a mature audience. To see Ogata Ken in an equally great role (but one that provides a terrific contrast to his role in this film), I also recommend that you check out "The Demon". |
