The Runaway Pistol

YesAsia Editorial Description

Lam Wah Chuen, usual cinematographer for director Fruit Chan (Made in Hong Kong), directs The Runaway Pistol, an acclaimed black comedy about the travels of a single pistol and how it wreaks havoc in the lives of those it touches. Narrated with tongue-in-cheek matter-of-factness by the pistol itself (!), the film follows the firearm as it moves from person-to-person and place-to-place, sometimes changing lives and other times ending them. The gun kills a Mainland sex worker, falls into the possession of a Hong Kong prostitute, ends up with some triads, is used by a cuckolded husband, and so on, ad infinitum. Alternately tragic, morbid, humorous, or strangely appropriate, the tales of the Runaway Pistol never cease to interest and entertain, and beneath its nonchalant voice lies truths about the desperate, pathetic, and utterly ridiculous existence of man. A fascinating, low-budget experiment in independent Hong Kong film, The Runaway Pistol was honored with numerous nominations at the Hong Kong Film Awards and Taiwan Golden Horse Awards, and rightfully appointed Lam Wah Chuen as a future filmmaker to watch.

Guns don't kill people, people kill people. Is that so? But guns sure make people trigger-happy, like power readily fills people with the urge to abuse it. The runaway pistol, which has a life of its own, travels from the underbelly of Mongkok to seedy Shenzhen across the border. It finds its way into the hands of a motley crowd of characters, and claims the lives of a sex worker, a small-time hood, troubled teenagers, and innocent and not-so-innocent bystanders, in manners absurd and inglorious. In his debut as director, Lam Wah Chuen, long-time collaborator of Fruit Chan as cinematographer and composer, fashions a one-of-a-kind road movie that is a complex kaleidoscope of images, and with an intensity bordering on the subversive and the unreal. A cruel fairy tale about a city on the verge of moral meltdown.

good movie, good video, plain awful audio Customer Review Rated Bad 7 - 7 out of 10

The movie is good; the video transfer is good.

The audible tracks are ok *except* when there should
be silence, there is a loud whooosh.

It is really distracting.

Seems like there the Hong Kongese do not know
how to operate the telecinc properly.
