A Shaw Bros. classic!
|
"The Twelve Gold Medallions" is based upon one of China's great fact-based legends. It has been told in a famous Beijing opera and here is told in an action-packed and colorful Shaw Bros. movie. The backdrop to the film's story is this: China has been invaded by a nomadic tribe of Jin Tartars from Manchuria. The heroic General Yue Fei leads the fight against them and is close to delivering a crushing blow to them. However, the duplicitous Prime Minister Qin Kuai seeks a different course. He wants to compromise with the invaders and hopes to appease them by giving them all of the territory north of the Huai River. He persuades the emperor to recall Gen. Yue from the battlefield by sending out orders to return to the capital written on twelve gold medallions. This movie tells of a small band of gallant warriors who seek to intercept those gold medallions before they are delivered to Gen. Yue so that Yue will proceed to crush the invaders. The lead role is brilliantly played by Yueh Hua, who perfectly fits the role of a chivalrous hero. He is ably supported by Chin Ping and a host of the Shaw Brothers' familiar faces. Many of the scenes in this film are downright thrilling, particularly a confrontation in a darkened tavern and a duel between two old masters. The filming of the movie is brilliant, with shots being framed in consistently interesting ways. By the way, watch the special features for a very informative interview with one of the Shaw cinematographers who gives away a number of secrets of, for example, how they disguised the wires when they were doing wire work action scenes. I highly recommend this richly entertaining, blood-soaked swordplay classic. For English speakers who wish to learn more about this story, I also recommend the novel "General Yue Fei" written during the Qing Dynasty by Qian Cai and nicely translated into English by T.L. Yang, the Chief Justice of Hong Kong. |

Twelve Gold Medallions--12 thumbs up!!
| "The Twelve Gold Medallions" is a very enjoyable movie. The story/plot is exciting, and the sound track adds to the suspence and excitement. Infact, the sound track supports the entire movie very well, even though it is western orchestra music. (I usually prefer Chinese music in my Shaw Bros.) The action scenes are choregraphed very well, and the photography of them is execellent! Camera movement and the use of close ups are done beautifully! As "Killer Clans" is in deep rich colors and "The Love Eterne" is in pastels, "The Twelve gold Medallions" is done with natural colors and earth tones. I look forward to watching this movie again! Not 2 thumps up, but 12 thumbs up for Gold Medallions!! |
