YesAsia Editorial Description

While the majority of Studio Ghibli's films are directed by Miyazaki Hayao and Takahata Isao, there have been exceptions over the years, including the 2002 feature The Cat Returns. Directed by Morita Hiroyuki who was previously a key animator on My Neighbors the Yamadas, The Cat Returns is a follow-up to late director Kondo Yoshifume's 1995 Ghibli feature Whisper of the Heart. In Whisper of the Heart, the young protagonist and aspiring writer toiled over a fantasy story about a schoolgirl and a dapper feline named Baron. Seven years later, her story turned into the brightly animated and wistfully told coming-of-age fantasy The Cat Returns. Though The Cat Returns is not at the same level as Miyazaki and Takahata's works, even a minor Studio Ghibli release is heads and shoulders above the competition.

Shy high school student Haru has long had the uncanny ability to communicate with cats. One day, she rescues a strange cat from oncoming traffic. But the cat turns out to be no ordinary feline. He is actually Prince of the Cat Kingdom and to repay Haru's kindness, he offers to take her hand in marriage! To clear up the mix-up, Haru travels to the Cat Kingdom with the help of Baron. But once she steps into the land of the cats, she discovers that she herself is gradually turning into a cat!

This version also features the bonus short film Ghiblies Episode 2.

Professional Review of "The Cat Returns / Ghiblies Episode 2 (Japan Version - English Subtitles)"

August 1, 2007

Let me just say up front that The Cat Returns is a delight. I don't mean that in some hippy, old growth forest way. I mean I was so filled with such pure joy on leaving the cinema that I thought my chest would burst. How many films can you say that about?

The Cat Returns is everything Disney animation used to be. While the Disney corporate vulture picks at the bones of its former greatness producing corpses that imitate life without the humanity that comes from the soul of imagination, Ghibli gives us a simple, fantastic tale that is suitable for any age.

Haru is the beautifully drawn teenage heroine. She is lankier and slightly clumsy which sets her apart from her Studio Ghibli sisters. Haru is completely caught up in the minutiae of her day-to day existence. It takes an encounter with an oddly noble cat to open her eyes to a whole other world. When she rescues a cat prince, Haru finds that the cat kingdom is falling over itself with gratitude to thank her. However, their notion of remuneration is extremely cat-centric. Finding hundreds of gift-wrapped mice in one's school locker is certainly not going to help with Haru's high school popularity.

Haru seeks out two cats to help her. There is the fat and surly Muta along with the dashing and debonair Baron. Muta and Baron are two instantly recognisable character types but Ghibli has them embrace their roles with such gusto that you cannot help but be swept along, hanging on every daring rescue and every perilous escape.

There is plenty of high adventure for Haru, Muta and Baron as the king of the cat kingdom is constantly escalating to ever more outrageous contingencies to thwart them, and plenty of humour flows naturally from the characters and their actions. This is the beauty of The Cat Returns, nothing is forced or contrived.

The Cat Returns' message like the rest of the elements in the film is beautifully embedded into the story. It is not a simple message of the 'be kind to people' or 'friends are important'. It is a subtle remark on the transition from adolescent crushes and idylls to a more mature perception of the world.

The worldwide success of Finding Nemo shows that there is demand for quality animation for children and adults. What people don't know is Ghibli has been consistently producing films of this gold standard for years. All I can say is see it. Take your friends to see it. Take your friends and their children to see it. We've already wasted enough time.

Superb Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
Picked this up to complete my Ghibli collection. What an adventure! This movie really made my day!
Liked the characters alot and the cantonese dub is decent (but the main female sounded a little half asleep).
My only complaint is the quality of the animation which is not as good as the other Ghibli movies: afterall, this IS one of the latest ghibli titles. Other than that, the story is not to be missed!

The Cat`s Whiskers Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Studio Ghibli have managed to create yet another magical masterpiece. The animation is superb and although the story may be a little sparse, the characters more than make up for this minor flaw.I thoroughly enjoyed watching this film, which left me with a big smile on my face for the rest of the day.
Recommended for anyone who enjoys excellent animation and,of course, cats.

Another Excellent Work of Studio Ghibli Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Seeing Japanese Animation since young kid of 7 yrs. I am 40 yrs. now, still loving the J-animation. One of the Master Miyazaki's employees did this work, and in this movie, there is no good or evil, nor magic neither witches, it is just a ordinary school girls, like a neighbor girl next door, into a wonderful Cat's Kingdom, and found out her confidence back and finally back to normal life. My 2 yrs. baby boys watched this movie again and again, "My Neighborhood Totoro" also is his favor, to have young kids and adult a pure entertainment and clear mind of Human Beings. Get this movie and it worth every penny of your harworking money!!

This is one of my best Japanese Animes i've seen in a long time...although the beginning was a little slow, but it won't distract you from the rest of the movie. A lot of funny parts, some very true points of a teen girl's life...being late...yet it still takes you to another world. I couldn't take the smile off my face. A great must see anime movie!!!

Sweet Movie-Sugoi!! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Hayao Miyazaki does it again. The Cat Returns is a movie with a simple story line. "Always be yourself". The movie is not as dark as Spirited Away, and one call tell based on the colour of the settings in the movie.

The story tells of a young girl called Haru who saves a cat one day from being killed by a truck. Unknown to her the cat is actually a prince from the "Cat Kingdom". The prince's father decides to repay the debt by showering haru with "cat gifts" much to her chargin and worse off, tries to marry her off to the prince. She then seeks the help of another walking and talking cat called Baron to help her get out of the predicament. Story goes on to tell their escape out of Cat Kingdom before Haru actually becomes a cat herself.

I especially like the bit where Baron and friends come and rescue her and also interesting to see how cats can walk upright!! Only problem is that i find the movie a tad to short. This story will bring a smile to your face. very sweet!
