YesAsia Editorial Description

Winner of a Hong Kong Film Award for Best Picture, Once Upon a Time in China is a kung-fu epic that's wildly entertaining and historically relevant. It is the late 1800s and China is in turmoil. Western influence is threatening the pride and sovereignty of the Chinese people, who are being enslaved for foreign labor, or becoming addicted to opium. It falls upon Wong Fei Hong (Jet Li), a renowned doctor, healer, patriot, and kung-fu artist to stand up and be counted. Charged with protecting the region with his militia, Fei Hong becomes embroiled in political intrigue and martial arts rivalries as corrupt foreigners and corrupt Chinese attempt to gain control of the region. When a rival martial arts master joins the foreigners, Fei Hong faces his greatest challenge yet. Can he save his true love Yee (Rosamund Kwan), as well as right the wrongs against his beloved land of China?

If one were to compile a list of essential Hong Kong Cinema, they would undoubtedly include director Tsui Hark's Once Upon a Time in China. In addition to being a revelatory work that combined kung-fu action, political allegory, and historical drama, Once Upon a Time in China revitalized the legend of Chinese patriot Wong Fei Hong, and launched a new series of films starring a character that had already been the subject of scores of previous films and television serials. For Western audiences, Once Upon a Time in China also provided martial arts superstar Jet Li with his signature role as Wong Fei Hong, a role that Li would reprise in four more films, including the 1997 blockbuster Once Upon a Time in China and America, which featured Wong Fei Hong in the Old West!

This customer review refers to Once Upon a Time in China (US Version)
A must-see movie for all Jet Li fans Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
The first half of "Once Upon a Time in China" practically bursts at the seams with its extraordinarily complex story, a story that represents the complicated times that it depicts. The film is freighted with the conflicting cross-currents of a China being torn apart by German, British, and French colonizers, as well as an American presence and the Mongol Qing rulers in Beijing, of Jesuit proselytizers, of a criminal gang vying with local police for control and influence, of the martial arts school of nationalist hero Wong Fei Hung, and of a new wuxia master in town who seeks to unseat Wong Fei Hung. Add to the mix time spent on the development of a host of different characters and the whole thing threatens to become too dizzingly complex until director Tsui Hark shifts gears in the second half and focusses on a series of eye-popping action set pieces in which good guys Jet Li (as Wong Fei Hung), Yuen Biao, and Kent Cheng take on a host of baddies in order to save damsel-in-distress Rosamund Kwan, quash the criminal gang, and resist the evil foreigners. It's all a bit messy, but utterly irresistible, as its 135 minute running length flies by. Very highly recommended. (Note: I watched a version of the movie distributed by Columbia TriStar that had the original Cantonese dialogue and English subtitles.)

not enough of great character Customer Review Rated Bad 7 - 7 out of 10
this movie wouldve been a master piece if the fight choreographers wouldve gave yuen biao a proper fighting role, biao wouldve outclassed jet li but when biao got a chance to shine, the fights were to quick. pitty because the film lacks great fights

Why, This! Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Why this movie has to deal with foreigns that try to speak English? That's just wonder me. I think that this movie was alright for me, even though this was in the early 90s'. But what I am concern is that why this movie has to be more about Jet Li and Rosamund Kwan than his students or his Po Chi Lam. Man, this movie needs more action, not about more love.

yuen biao should have got more screen time Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
before filming biao got promised the movie was mainly about hes character, how wrong that was.
jet li was doubled throughout the movie, biao was given a limited chance to show what he can really do kung fu wise, and the fights werent up to scratch, not a classic in my opinion, yuen biao should have got more time, he wouldve outclassed jet li blow for blow if he had done.
