Popularly known to Western audiences as Master of the Flying Guillotine, One-Armed Boxer vs. The Flying Guillotine is classic Hong Kong-style martial arts madness! A sequel to the 1971 classic One-Armed Boxer, the film stars Jimmy Wang Yu as the titular One-Armed Boxer, who killed the apprentices of Fung Cheng Wu Chi (Kam Kong), the last of a group of Manchu assassins assigned by the Manchu Emperor to slaughter the Ming Rebels. Besides thirsting for revenge, Fung is the master of a peculiar weapon that resembles a Qing-style hat - only with razor-sharp blades hidden inside which snap shut once launched onto some poor fool's head. Attached to a chain, the lethal weapon is known only as the flying guillotine. But can this flying hat of death match up against a kung-fu master with only one arm? Blood flies and heads roll in One-Armed Boxer vs. The Flying Guillotine, a classic kung-fu confrontation which dazzles and dismembers like only a classic Hong Kong kung-fu film can!

The sole surviving master of this art was FUNG SHENG WU CHI, a long-time hermit who was finally forced to leave his recluse and avenge the killing of 2 of his disciples by a certain one-armed fighter......

See what I have to tell you
| Better movies have been made with Jimmy Wang Yu. But if you love the kung fu star just like me, then what does it matter, if the story is bad or not. What count is that, he is my hero and I enjoyed it. Of course, I've mentioned it already. It's not his best, but never forget it ! He is still "Jimmy Wang Yu", one of my favourite ! |

This Guillotine is a "Guill"ty Pleasure!

A bald blind man with a long white beard is practicing an empty hand form when he receives a message via carrier pidgeon that two of his students have been killed by the One Armed Man (Jimmy Wang Yu). The blind man takes out a weapon. It's a chain with a strange bladed helmet attached to the end of it. When it's thrown the helmet lands over its victim's head. The thrower then pulls the chain and the helmet's blades are activated. The blind man releases the pidgeon to demonstrate. Whhhhoooo Whhhhooo Clonk Click Slash! The pidgeon falls and rolls around like a...like a...a pidgeon with its head cut off. This is our introduction to The Flying Fuillotine!!!!! Jimmy Wang Yu directed this film and does a competent job both as director and actor. Though his kung fu is limited he knows how to look tough on camera. The main villain is truly heinous and there's a Thai Kickboxer character that is equally hateable. The story allows for plenty of fighting and killing as a large portion of it involves a tournament of style against style and no rules. Some of the brutality is so cruel it's laughable in its disgust (the barefoot Thai boxer is lured into a fight that takes place on a metal floor being heated by his enemies with fire that causes his feet to burn and blister looking terribly painful, eyes are gauged out, throats are strangled with cues, the blind man even kills a one armed beggar boasting make believe skills to a waiter to get free food, etc.). While Jimmy's character's ability to walk on ceilings is a little cuckoo it's nothing compared to a Yoga practioner whose arms extend in and out across whole rooms like accordian popple toys! Unbelievabley, the film is played seriously and works a good deal of the time delivering a great soundtrack, some well coreographed fights (Lau Kar Wing is in the film and had a hand in this department), and some real suspense and cleverness as Jimmy is hunted down by the deadly man with the flying guillotine. If you're looking for some pretty violent martial arts and some goofiness thrown in for good measure then don't duck THE ONE-ARMED SWORDSMAN VS. THE FLYING GUILLOTINE! |
