Out of the Shaw Brothers vaults comes My Darling Genie, an amiable early-eighties comedy starring the enchanting Cherie Chung. Derek Yee is Cheng, a brusque construction worker who discovers a magical umbrella on a routine dig. When the umbrella is opened and sprinkled with water, a 200 year-old genie arrives to grant the owner's wishes. As if that weren't enough, this genie happens to look like Cherie Chung! Cheng has been given a virtual ticket to Heaven, but he's more annoyed than grateful, and uses the Genie to perform mostly menial tasks. He also entreats her to not cause a commotion, as he would like to keep her a secret from the materialistic mitts of mankind. But the secret gets out, and soon everyone wants the Genie to grant their wishes! At first, Cheng is glad to be rid of the Genie...but something's wrong. He's grown accustomed to her face, and soon the guy who wanted her gone will do anything to get her back! A frothy comedy with a touch of silly fantasy, My Darling Genie is a divine eighties showcase for the sexy-cute charms of the one and only Cherie Chung!

A pleasant surprise

The opening scene of "My Darling Genie" is so amateurishly awful that my expectations for this movie were very low. Then Cherie Chung enters the film and it all comes alive! Cherie is superb in "My Darling Genie" as the sweetly sexy genie who has been locked up inside an umbrella for 200 years. She plays the role with such great joy and conviction that you just may be convinced that she could grant your every wish. Moreover, Cherie Chung is not the only reason to watch this very enjoyable film. "My Darling Genie" truly works as a goofy slapstick comedy. There is one scene that is guaranteed to have you chuckling for days: villain Li Yui, seeking to steal the umbrella in which Cherie resides, is lowered through a skylight on ropes held by his underlings. The comic chaos that ensues as Li swings around the room is brilliant! Highly recommended by your humble servant for all fans of light-hearted comedies. |
