YesAsia Editorial Description

Jet Li tries something new with Hitman, an action comedy with a surprisingly charming performance from the action superstar! Fu (Jet Li) is an ex-solider whose honesty and goodness is a little unusual for someone so adept at acrobatic kung-fu fighting. When a low-rent triad (Eric Tsang) discovers Fu's fighting prowess, he entreats the gentle tough guy to help him score a 100 million dollar bounty placed on the "King of Assassins," who just offed a high-ranking Japanese crimelord. But with such a large sum of cash up for grabs, hitmen of all shapes and sizes appear out of the woodwork to claim the reward for themselves! Factoring into the mess are Simon Yam as a dapper cop assigned to chase the multiplying hitmen, and cute Gigi Leung as Jet Li's adorable love interest. Director Stephen Tung intercuts the laughs with finely-choreographed action sequences, and the ace Hong Kong stars provide necessary charm and charisma. Hitman is a decidedly different, and wildly entertaining action comedy!

Professional Review of "Hitman (DTS)"

April 9, 2008

This professional review refers to Hitman
Hitman, Jet Li's last movie in the HKSAR, has the feel of a couple of guys hanging out on a long summer afternoon. The masked King of Killers assasinates a Japanese industrialist, Mr. Tsukamoto, activating the gentleman's $100 million revenge fund. The King of Killers becomes Most Wanted on the international underworld's hit list. Who is the King of Killers? No one knows, least of all Mainland naif, Jet Li, trying, and failing, to make a buck as hired muscle in the HKSAR. Enter Eric Tsang, a jabberjaw con man who hustles Jet, enrolling him as one of the assassins vying for the Tsukamoto Revenge Fund. Tsukamoto Jr. shows up as well, scary gweilo Paul Rapovski in tow, and after he guzzles his grandfather's ashes he vows to bag the King of Killers himself. Before you know it, Jet and Tsang are in over their heads and sinking fast.

The two make a delightful odd couple, and their give and take has the arrhythmia of real life. Both men get on each others' nerves, but they're both so lonely they prefer being annoyed to being apart. Jet is a dogsbody, happy to get even a counterfeit watch as a present, and Tsang is the con artist as middle-aged man. Estranged from his lawyer daughter (Gigi Leung) and lacking even the money to bail himself out of jail, he's desperate to have a better life if only he knew how.

Produced by Gordon Chan, this is the kind of movie that sacrifices narrative logic to moviemaking brio. Director Stephen Tung Wai was the action director on A Better Tomorrow and The Blade, and he stages several of his trademark claustrophobic fights here. Tung Wai felt there was always something down-and-out about Jet's personality, and the movie is an ode to that quality. Jet Li uses his own voice, for the first time on film, and its squeakiness suits his character perfectly. In this movie he isn't the best fighter, only the second-best, so he has to try just a little bit harder. Compared to the comic gusto of Eric Tsang, and the air-conditioned cool of Simon Yam, Jet Li comes off as the ultimate underdog. It's a strange, but fitting, end to his HKSAR career.

Jet Li as expected Customer Review Rated Bad 7 - 7 out of 10
A touch of a difference in character for Jet but not a new character as a whole as the naive (not stupid) mainlander who's morals don't really match up with his profession of choice. Funny scene of Eric Tsang trying to find Jet's sense of personal style to vamp him up as a hitman or "the professional". Action as to be expected from the superstar & the usual disappointing platonic "love" interest.

Good film but the rape issue is too much for me to Customer Review Rated Bad 7 - 7 out of 10
Overall I thought this film was pretty good but the start of the film when the guy was talking about raping young girls during the war really effected me from watching this film more often.

Excellent!!! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
One of Jet's best. The contrast between the humor and action fit for this movie. While it isn't as action packed as other Jet movies, this is a good movie on its own right.
