YesAsia Editorial Description

Heroes make circumstances and circumstances make heroes. There should be no other statements more appropriate to depict in a nutshell the battles between the two feudal lords in Han and Chu. Their history, being one of the most popular materials used in costume dramas, is coming right at your home in the most unforgettable version! The Battlefields (1985) should no doubt be one of your collectable items as it is the posthumous work of late Yung Mei-ling. At the age of 26 Yung was the guest star playing Jade Butterfly, the spy from another feudal state Qin, in two episodes of this epic drama. What makes this title even more appealing is certainly the huge amount of manpower and resources invested in the production.

In this 1985 version of The Battlefields, Lawrence Ng Kai-wai is Liu Bang, the lord of Han, and Shek Sau is Xiang Yu, the overlord of West Chu. In Liu's camp the think-tank comprises Han Xin (Hui Tian-ci), Zhang Liang (Lai Hon-taz) and Xiao He (Liu Jiang). But heroes are never short of the company of belles. Here we have Idy Chan Yuk-lin charming all as the concubine Yu and Sheung Tin-ngo as IV Zhi. As the Chinese idiom says: it is just too crowded for two equally fierce tigers to inhabit the same cave. A face-off is doomed to come when the two men with the same ambition to override one another meets and a series of sanguinary battles is just around the corner…

The Battlefield Customer Review Rated Bad 5 - 5 out of 10
I personally believe the actors did a good job in the movie. However, I dislike the ending of the movie. I have never seen a movie where the bad guy wins. I don't think this movie is suitable since it gives the impression that one can use dirty tricks to conquer a nation. It would have been an excellent movie if the good guy can finally win by courage and determination to prove that GOODNESS will always win over EVIL in the battlefield without being malicious and deceitful. I guess anyone who will buy this movie will have to decide if what I see as deceitful in a person is the same for him/her. Maybe this is how to fight and win a war. I do love Yung Mei Ling in this movie. Her role was brief but she is so beautiful.

Disapointing-deceiving Customer Review Rated Bad 3 - 3 out of 10
I bought the Battlefield because the advertizing shows the name of Yung Mei Ling among the 3 main names of actors and a big pic of Yung Mei Ling as cover of VCD.
However Yung Mei Ling has a minor role and doesn't play long (very quickly died).
While Chan Idy is the main female character, her name is displayed among the name of "other artists". The name of Idy Chan should appears on the place of Yung Mei Ling name.
I find it very deceiving (almost unethical) to use Yung Mei Ling name/pic to sell this series. The whole story is quite boring.
The only nice thing is that although Yung Mei Ling appears only briefly, her performance is best, always so alive and so touching.
