YesAsia Editorial Description

From China's most celebrated filmmaker, Zhang Yimou, comes Hero, a dazzling martial arts film that dramatizes one of the most turbulent times in Chinese history! Jet Li stars as Nameless, a swordsman who is granted an audience with the King of Qin (Chen Tao Ming) by recounting his victories over three famed assassins, Broken Sword (Tony Leung Chiu Wai), Flying Snow (Maggie Cheung), and Sky (Donnie Yen). Arriving at the Imperial Palace, he bears the weapons of his fallen foes as proof of his victory. But the King suspects that Nameless may have a hidden agenda, and hints that Nameless' victories over the other assassins were really a ploy to get close enough to perform the assassination himself. Is Nameless really the King's greatest ally? Or could he be the King's greatest enemy?

Co-starring Zhang Ziyi, Hero is a rewarding martial arts film that questions the true nature of heroism. The detailed, dazzling choreography from Ching Siu Tung, and the exquisite cinematography from Christopher Doyle helped the film earn an Academy Award Nomination for Best Picture, as well as critical recognition worldwide. Zhang Yimou's Hero is a complex, thoughtful epic that can entertain, provoke, and above all thrill like few movies can!

Arthouse Hero
Zhang Yimou has many tales to tell in Hero.

Most of my relatives were not really impressed by Zhang Yimou's interpretation of Chinese history in this larger-than-life epic. As for me, I can forgive him for staying vague as far as the historical details are concerned in return for the cinematic tour de force he offers in his grand portrayal of a group of would-be assassins. Everything has been elevated to a point of sublime visual beauty, starting from the martial arts duels and the romantic conflicts all the way to the imagined confrontation with China's legendary first emperor. Viewed from an artistic angle, the fantastic performances by Maggie Cheung and Tony Leung Chiu Wai as star-crossed lovers is already reason enough to give this film a try. As far as their affair in Hero is concerned, it goes without saying that this experienced film duo alone has enough star chemistry to carry Zhang's work. Add to that visually arresting martial arts action with a superior Jet Li in the center, and Hero should be able to enthrall you in spite of its many wirework shots.

One scene in particular, the fight between Maggie Cheung and Zhang Ziyi as contenders for the love of Tony Leung Chiu Wai, left me exceptionally stunned. Shot against a backdrop full of yellow leaves that beautifully contrast with the women's red costumes, this may be one of cinema's finest moments.

Wrapped up in some remarkable performances and picturesque scenarios and carried by Emi Wada's beautiful costumes, Christopher Doyle's skilled cinematography, and Tan Dun's complementing mystical music score, Hero delivers art for art's sake to perfection.

best version of the director's Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Just about everyone has seen this movie and already knows the story, soundtrack, acting, directing, and the cinematography, so I'm just reviewing this disc.

This Hong Kong Edko Films Ltd. release is the best version of the director's cut (roughly 10 minutes longer than the non-director's cut). Compared to the Guangdong Face Home Video release, this Edko release has a much better picture quality, the opening and closing words on the screen are shown in English (good for those who can't read the Chinese characters), and the Face release has an annoying watermark that pops up regularly thoughout the film - this Edko version does not. However, the Edko version lacks Faye Wong's song in the credits and there are no bonus materials at all on the DVD. Also, the description is incorrect - this Edko version DOES indeed have optional English subtitles. There's a comparision of the two director's cut releases on dvdactive.com. Enjoy!

US Version was disappointing. Customer Review Rated Bad 5 - 5 out of 10
Historically correct to an extent but I according to history kung fu did not appear til after this era. Also, the flying over waters is too fantasy-like, not only that but it just doesn't look good nor realistic. But what I disliked most especially from the US version alone is a line "Our Nation" Historically the prhase was "All Under Heaven" and I believe the Hong Kong version says All Under Heaven but "Our Nation"? Sounds like a Christian person editted this or something...

Twisted from dictatorship Customer Review Rated Bad 3 - 3 out of 10
This movie is definitely a piece of art.

The king is a BAD king in Chinese history who unified China but killed lots and lots of scholars, and civilians, and destroyed existing cultures and books.

Unified a kingdom and then killed lots of people and destroyed all previous cultures and books are serious crimes! The hero in this movie should kill the king.

However, in this movie, the story wants to tell the audience that unifying China is a glory itself, and killing lots of civilians is not a crime, is a necessity, is a process.

This is a twisted logic that debase human values.

I heard that this movie was written and funded by a dictationship country -- Mainland China Communist Party.

A Decent Movie with Excellent Artistry Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
First of all, the images in this movie are beautiful. Each camera angle was thought out carefully by the director, envoking vibrant colors that portray the mood of the scene. It's the artistic quality that has captured me when watching this film. The plotline is pretty interesting, with skilled actors/actresses. It's a step-up from previous martial-arts movies.
