Professional Review of "Love & Promises 2nd Version (Normal Version)"

June 18, 2008

This professional review refers to Love & Promises (AVEP) (Limited Edition)
Steady Quality: Love & Promises

~ Leon Lai

Becoming the boss of a record company is really something and that might have fuelled Leon Lai, who did not release an album for two years, to amazingly release his third album, Love & Promises (AVEP), in an unbelievably short period of just three months. The album sees five brand new Cantonese songs, two Interludes and two music videos included.

The industrious Leon has definitely been even more hardworking than most newcomers.

While Wyman Wong wrote the Cantonese lyrics, Leon took care of all the Mandarin song material. The album was produced by Mark Lui and Chen HuiYang and the majority of songs offer what Leon is very good at, ballads and love songs.

Most of the songs are up to his standard and are what Leon's friends like. Apart from the leading track Call It A Deal (Track#5), most songs do not stand out from the rest but they are all ok. As for Leon's vocal, he keeps his standard though does not deliver flawless masterpieces yet. Undoubtedly, he is skillful and sings with passion.

Call It A Deal , the first principal tune, is romantic and rhythmic and a perfect match with the TV commercial. The lyrics of the song are poppy and catchy but the present reviewer expected Wyman, the lyricist, to have done better than this. As for Leon's performance, it's alright and is better than the last plugged song Don't Lick The Wound.

Accompanied by plain guitar and an angelic female vocal, So As To Miss You More (Track#7) is really neat. Love Perish Together (Track#6) is a ballad with miserable characters and a sad story. It may not be the most impressive song in the album, yet is definitely one of those you should pay attention to.

As for the others, Crazy In Love (Track#8) and Promise Of Love (Track#9) are also worthy of sparing your time listening to.

Recommendations: Call It A Deal and So As To Miss You More

Like this EP Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I like this EP, esp for the song Yi Yan Wei Ding and Qing Gui Yu Jin. These song made me remember the older songs of Leon in the 90's. People may say that Qing Gui Yu Jin copies Pachabel's (sp?) Canon in D. What I think is that both melodies blend well together in the song.

The melody is not the orginal Customer Review Rated Bad 3 - 3 out of 10
The melody is very good but it is copied from other people. I hear this melody one year ago in my rent Korea cell phone.

good Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
The songs are good but not great. The ep is not as good as Leon Dawn. Anyway, the first track was a good ballad ,but then any most of the ballads from "leon dawn" will blow this track away. 2nd song is good but I think Mark Lui copied the "Cannon D" music. Track 3 has a comfortable and forgettable tune that makes you wanna listen when u're bored. Track 4 is well, nice song with cool lyrics. The beats are cool but not as cool as Mark Lui's previous works. n then u got the mandarin version of the 1st song in which leon rewrote the lyrics from canton to mando, just like he did to the song "what?". yup overall the CD is satisfying to say the least. well...at least it's better than leon homework!

Excellent Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
For approximately the same price as the original love & promises, we get one necklace, one extra music video of a very good song, and a music version of one of the best track of the album. This is a value pack for those who didn't buy the original love & promises album. This is also a perfect purchase for those who already own the original cd. Go buy it!
