YesAsia Editorial Description

It's here! The saga of "The Great Jang Geum" concludes in Dae Jang Geum 3 (Episodes 37-54)! Jang-Geum (Lee Young-Ae of Joint Security Area) finally returns to the palace as a full-fledged physician, only to face her longtime rival Keum-Young (Hong Lina) once more. Keum-Young has long resented Jang-Geum for being a better chef, but the man Keum-Young desires, Min Jung-Ho (Ji Jin Hee of Love Letter), is in love with Jang-Geum!

Still Jang-Geum perseveres, curing many patients, and impresses the King (Lim Ho) with her competence and determination. She resolves to learn the secrets of Korean cooking and medicine in order to cure The King of his chronic illnesses, but with many government officials opposing her, the road she faces is her toughest yet. But with her remarkable patience, wisdom, and love, Jang-Geum continues on the path to her eventual destiny: to challenge society and convention, and ascend to a position in the palace never-before-held by a woman!

The true-life tale of the first woman in Korean history to gain a post in the King's Court, Dae Jang Geum (AKA Jewel in the Palace) garnered a 54% ratings share during its initial run on Korean television, a record at the time. Its hold on audiences has since grown to Hong Kong and Taiwan, becoming a sensation in both countries - and it has yet to premiere in many Asian territories! With its twist-laden plot, fascinating cultural detail, universal themes of good and evil, and captivating subplot of forbidden romance, it's no surprise that Dae Jang Geum has won over audiences worldwide!

Professional Review of "Dae Jang Geum aka: Jewel in the Palace Volume 3 (End) (MBC TV Series) (US Version)"

    January 17, 2005

This professional review refers to Dae Jang Geum aka : Jewel in the Palace Volume 1 (MBC TV Series) (US Version)
Having been initiated by members of my family, I am now addicted to the most popular drama series in South Korea. The series, The Great Jang-Geum, is an extended historical drama set in the sixteenth-century court of the Korean Emperor. It tells the story of a real historical figure, Jang-Geum, a girl who grows up as an apprentice cook in the royal kitchens and rises to prominence within the palace. The affairs of the kitchen and the royal household are depicted as matters of the most grave import; the factional struggles and battles over hierarchy and preferment among the Kitchen Ladies are vicious and at times murderous. In this hostile world, the virtuous Jang-Geum is constantly tested and always prevails.

The production values are high: the photography, the interiors, the outdoor locations and especially the costumes seem carefully and expensively done. The point, though, is the storytelling, and that has the elements of a nineteenth-century novel: obscure parentage and hidden identity, a clear distinction between good and evil (with occasional surprises), a sub-plot of forbidden but chaste love, and comic minor characters. Even the rhythm of crisis and resolution and the end-of-episode cliffhangers fit the mold perfectly. Compelling writing, a very competent cast, and frequent Iron-Chef-like cooking sequences make the hour-long episodes go by too quickly. The only fault may be that Jang-Geum, like Esther Summerson in Bleak House, is too perfect. It's not an insignificant fault, but perhaps it's unavoidable if things are to be kept chugging forward through the sprawling, extroverted plot without getting bogged down in anyone's subjectivity.

It certainly does sprawl. The Great Jang-Geum is projected to run for about sixty one-hour episodes, aired at a rate of two per week. A steady two episodes per week for half a year without interruption makes for a longer and more concentrated viewing experience than what an American drama series can provide, which seems meager by comparison. The result is that watching The Great Jang-Geum becomes part of one's life; it adds enormously to the pleasure to have someone to talk with about the story as it unfolds. It might be most accurate to think of it as a high-class soap opera, but with much tighter plotting and better production, and without the aimlessness, absurdity and desperation that the voracious open-ended soap opera format seems to engender.

What surprises me most is that someone has gone to the all the effort to subtitle this vast program in English. Could it be a labor of love, a purely disinterested act of cultural outreach? Whatever the reason, I salute the effort.

AMAZING SERIES!! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
While it's far different from Jumong which was my first K-Drama to see, I really found this series fascinating and very enjoyable. I don't have a keen interest in cooking, but this one caught my attention on the accuracy and detail of life during these times. The story also stays intriguing and suspenseful from one episode to the next. Just like Jumong was, it's incredibly hard to put down. Same as my last historical K-Drama to see, the costumes, sets, props etc all all incredible to detail, which is incredibly impressive for a TV Series. The acting is all amazingly superb. Even the children characters are great actors. I find looking at this series also catches my attention as in today's society a kitchen isn't such a harsh and dangerous environment. Jang-Geum is an incredible woman to have lived and persevered with all that she did so that she could write her name in the history books. It was a great purchase I'm very happy with. The only tiny disappointment to mention is that Volume 2 is no longer available and I'm still searching for it so I can complete my collection of it.

Fantastic, Loved this K-Drama Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
A true story with beautiful scenery, historical accuracy, and great acting. It is absolutely engrossing! It is a fascinating story which has been wonderfully adapted for television and is beautifully acted and filmed. This young woman's life story weaves through the palace intrigues of the Chosun dynasty in Korea, which for most Americans is totally unfamiliar territory. However, on a personal level, any modern person will identify with the problems Jang Geum encounters fighting a corrupt administration. In addition, the Korean philosophy of life which underlies individual's choices and the events in the story makes the story unpredictable to most Americans and Western civilizations.

I don't usually like dramas but this one I got addicted too and fast. I love this show! Jang Geum serves as a role model for all girls who struggle in the process of achieving goals. Her strength, perseverance, loyalty, Compassion and integrity should be things we all should strive for against the Lady Chois in our lives. We should all be like Jang Geum and I definitley recommend this show.
