YesAsia Editorial Description

An arranged marriage between a proud Chinese man and a fiery Japanese woman leads to a variety of domestic squabbles, numerous cross-cultural misunderstandings, and a martial arts battle of epic proportions in Heroes of the East, an entertaining Shaw Brothers fightfest from master director Lau Kar Leung! Also known as Shaolin Challenges Ninja, this kung fu comedy stars Gordon Liu Chia Hui (36th Chamber of Shaolin, Kill Bill) as Ah To, a young man who marries a Japanese girl named Kuda (Yuko Mizuno). Their seeming matrimonial bliss is soon spoiled after a series of fights between husband and wife leads to a fed-up Kuda returning to Tokyo to consult her sensei! Viewing Ah To's behavior as insulting to the Japanese people, Kuda's sensei Sanzo (Fist of Legend's Kurada Hoshou) heads to China with a crew of fighters in tow to teach the young man a lesson. With several martial arts masters at his doorstep, will Ah To be up to the challenge? Find out in Heroes of the East, a surefire Shaw Brothers classic and a fantastic showcase for both Chinese and Japanese martial arts!

Whether it's known as Heroes of The East or Shaolin Challenges Ninja, this ranks as a special event from legendary director Liu Chia-liang. Watch, in appreciative awe, as a Chinese groom and Japanese bride create a loving "Kung-fu family feud" with one Nipponese expert after another testing the skills of Gordon Liu Chia-hui -- with swords, spears, pikes, karate, and even Sai Seui. The result is a dazzling delight.

Professional Review of "Heroes of the East (DVD) (Hong Kong Version)"

March 11, 2005

Can't we all just get along? That's the peaceful sentiment hoped for - although not immediately achieved - in Lau Kar Leung's Heroes of the East, a kung fu flick that uses Sino-Japanese tensions as an excuse to showcase both countries' martial arts prowess and deliver a little social commentary just for good measure. The story hinges on the proud, but good-natured Ah To (Gordon Liu Chia Hui), a young Chinese man stuck in an arranged marriage with a Japanese girl named Kuda (Yuko Mizuno). During the wedding, Kuda sticks to her own rituals and ignores the customs of the Chinese, which proves to be just the beginning of the couple's marital problems.

Angered by the arrangement, Kuda soon flees to Tokyo to consult her sensei and possible ex-lover, Sanzo (Kurada Honshou, a.k.a. Yasuaki Kurata). With his wife away, Ah To parties hard, but is later convinced by his sniveling servant Hsiao Kwan (Cheng Hong Yip) to send for her. Knowing she would be too proud to apologize, Ah To writes a letter mocking the Japanese way in the hope that Kuda will be so enraged that she will return to China immediately. Unfortunately, all does not go to plan as the jealous Sanzo ends up reading the letter instead. Viewing it as a slap in the face to all of Japan, Sanzo and the best fighters from his dojo head off to China for revenge!

The film boasts strong performances that really help hold the piece together, particularly from the two leads, Gordon Liu and Kurada Hoshou. Overcoming a goofy haircut, Liu takes center stage as Ah To, and unlike his later more iconic roles, he's a henpecked husband pushed to the breaking point. There's a saying that a hero is only as a good as the villain who opposes him, and that certainly is the case in Heroes of the East. With his rugged good looks and obvious martial arts skills, Kurada makes an excellent sparring partner for Liu. To his credit, Lau Kar Leung chooses not to use a stereotyped image of a Japanese male, opting instead to make Sanzo every bit as charismatic as Ah To. Although I wouldn't dare proclaim that Heroes of the East provides any serious insights into the historically contentious relationship between the Chinese and the Japanese, but ultimately, the film is fun, engaging, and it's got Gordon Liu versus Kurada Hoshou at the climax. For plenty of fight fans, those are reasons enough to check it out.

Marital art meets martial arts Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
"Heroes of the East" is martial arts heaven! Gordon Liu marries a Japanese tycoon's daughter. The bride is skilled in Japan's martial arts; the marriage becomes a battlefield between Chinese and Japanese wuxia styles. When defeated by hubbie, wife returns to Japan. Husband Liu sends her a challenge, but the challenge is answered by six Japanese experts. Can Gordon defeat them all? Great direction (and a nice cameo) by Lau Kar Leung. Very highly recommended!

Heroes of the East Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Fantastic! You can see Gordon's acting ability in this different character and of course his display of skills in the various martial arts weapons, i.e. the long sword, spear, butterfly blades (notice the intricate carving on the blades??) and 3-segment pole. The plot is unusual but instead of dualing to the death as some other movies may do, Director Lau Kar Leung pitted in his message that no matter what level of martial arts skill one possess, only by practising the critical principle of mutual respect/understanding for other forms of martial arts other than one's own, the practice of righteousness, fairplay and humility can one really reach the true platform of martial arts.

Wonderful supporting cast (including a cameo of the director himself as Beggar Su). Pity they didn't do an interview with Gordon in the special feature or get him to re-demonstrate those weapons. A Classic not to be missed out!!

We can get along! Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Perhaps the most unlikely place to learn cultural diversity or education on some differences in Chinese & Japanese customs, but definately entertaining when the martial arts worlds collide. I would have wanted Gordan Liu's "wife" to have been a little more classy in her martial arts demonstration but it rocks when a couple can rumble the way they do. In the end, Chinese Kung-fu rocks as usual but a wonderful display of mutual respect comes of it which allows the most important practice in martial arts as "peace" to reign supreme.

Don't Miss This One Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I echo everything already said. An excellent film. The first part is decidedly lighter in tone, with some wonderfully humourous scenes between husband and wife Liu and Yuka Mizumo, as Yuka is lauding the Japanese arts over her husband's Chinese skills. The latter half turns more serious as Yuka's martial arts "family" steps in to pick up the challenge Liu presents to his wife. And a grand and dazzling competition it is. Refreshing in that the object is more a fight to the win than a fight to the death. It's a shame that Shaw didn't seem to find another opportunity to use Yuka Mizumo in another film. She is absolutely marvellous. I understand she wasn't really skilled in the martial arts, but you'd never guess it by her performance in the first half of this film. Perhaps that's why she didn't participate in the competitions in the latter half. Nevertheless, her performance here is a real, and apparently rare, gem, and ought not to be missed. The entire film is a gem not to be missed.
